This last weekend, ArenaNet invited a few dozen members of the gaming press into its highly anticipated MMO, Guild Wars 2. The game is still in its closed beta testing stage, but the reveal of this event is an opportunity for the public to finally see what this game is all about.
Our Guild Wars columnist Elisabeth Cardy and I spent a good part of this weekend exploring as much as we could in the game in preparation for today's embargo lift. Read along for each of our impressions below, and be sure to watch our beta montage video at the end of each article.

@(Unverified) Kotaku says GW2 "could be one of the greatest massively multiplayer online role-playing games the genre's ever seen."

@(Unverified) Except it ends up saying pretty much the exact same thing.
"releasing what could be one of the greatest massively multiplayer online role-playing games the genre's ever seen"
Not a bad article from Kotaku, though, and thats saying a lot considering what they normally put out.

It's to the point that Dunraven is going the path that ol' Puremallace used to take...
Its glaringly obvious that nobdy can be this mis-informed and completely oblivious to their surroundings without actually trying. I mean...to be this moronic, you actually have to TRY not to read, and purposely stay away from any general news related to the topic at hand.
It reminds me of myself during the World Cup, I'll purposely ignore certain people and go out of my way to keep the Radio and TV off until I can get home and watch the reruns of the games.
Which is exactly what Dunraven has to do...he probably ignores every media outlet and completely turns-off his attention to any serious discussion of the topic / game until he can get to the Massively.com boards and drop completely false and empty statements, and linking Youtube Videos that he thinks prove his point...
Bravo Dunraven...because trust me, I know...turning off the outside world is pretty difficult...to do it on a daily basis is extraordinary.

Hm... I wonder if the performance issues were a result of the game not being properly optimized yet or if they were intentionally stress testing the servers. Hopefully that gets ironed out.
Either way, looks to be about as fantastic as I was expecting it to be. I'm sure I'll get just as many years, if not more, out of GW2 as i did GW1.

Why not? I'd think it's better to do as many tests as you can rather than just run all of your stress testing only at once specific point. Sure the "open" beta (if they even have one) will give them more concrete information on what they'll be facing come release, but doing some stress testing now would help them prepare for that ahead of time.

It is so hard to be a hater after reading those "impressions". A sad day in HateVille.

There will still be plenty of doubters and doomsayers... it IS the internet afterall... But it really does look like an awesome game (I love the ArenaNet environmental artitists... simply beautiful settings) and the gameplay is going to be refreshingly cooperative, instead of the co-dependency associated with all of the trinity-based class systems in other MMOGs.

@Lenn "impression" "review" whatever you want to call it the fact that it is positive and coming from self proclaimed GW1 fans isnt exactly shocking.

The same argument could be used against pretty much any game. Should we ignore all Mass Effect 3 previews/interviews/reviews from anyone who was a fan of the previous two?
This game is quite a departure from GW1, many hardcore fans of it are refusing to move on, so the fact such big fans of the original are posting impressions like these are a good thing.
If you're arguing against all previews/reviews in general, I don't see why you'd bother reading anything like this to begin with. Everyone is biased if you're going to look at things that way, wait and play it yourself.

@Leverne I'm a great hater, so let me give it a try...
Fixed-target combat system? Really? I'd rather have some of my combos self-root than to have a mindless tab-target mechanic.
I like TERA's shiny candy-like artwork and environments more than I like the stylized beauty of Guild Wars.
Eh. That's all I've got. It looks to be a great game and it will be good for me to have two new games to try side-by-side (TERA and GW2). Only one shall survive.
