It is a solid game for sure. I did the trial period in 2003 (?) on my linux computer, and had a good time. Nice of you to highlight an underrated and very much under-the-radar game. I wish they would go f2p/cash shop, but I guess they are happy with a niche subscriber community.

@h4ngedm4n

I think that Vendetta is one game that must never go F2P, cash shop or even mainstream. It's one of those 'off the radar' games that I think the biggest fans would prefer stay off the radar.

You'd just have to go there to see it. It's like an MMO Lost World. Even the pirates are (mostly) polite.

Give it another two weeks and you'll be bored out of your mind. Nice idea, and the execution is good for an indie, but in the end there's just not much meat on those bones.

Jeff if you like this game, I recommend X3: Terran Conflict. It's only a single player game, but it's a polished sandbox.

@DerpMchurson

Yeah, I played X and X2 back in the day. Keep meaning to make time for X3 but MMOs keep getting in the way, heh.

@Jef Reahard

I personally would recommend the Evochron series. The newest in the line is Evochron Mercenary. Fantastic offline and online play and quite the sim.

Not so much an MMO but quite the sandbox sim.

Evochron looks fun. I'll definitely pick it up on a steam sale.

Great article Jef, I had forgotten this game. I would pick this up again if I had the budget. I enjoyed my time in Vendetta, great community. Nice to break out the joystick again an fly. Hard to beat the pirates, I almost won once. Look forward to further reports on how Vendetta is doing.

This is not an MMO that holds your hand, that's for sure. You will pay your dues like it was 1999.

The interface is Elite. The control systems are Freespace. The ships range from single-seat fighters to corvette-sized cargo runners and mining haulers and I've heard rumors of capital ships in player command but I don't know if that's gone beyond the testing.

Cargo running past the pirates is as fun as it is frustrating, but I've spent hours just prospecting and trading without any hassle.

As I've said in my comment, I have already tried it. I know about the small and friendly community. It is similar to ATITD in that respect. The F2P comment is simply personal preference.

There is also Traveller AR just released in beta for iOS, it's a space exploration / trading game with a great deal of potential. It's buggy and with not all content realised but it is still in beta.

Nice reading, I am definitely one of those explorers at heart, and I can assure you that Vendetta has soul. As the author mentions, it displays a stunning degree of polish in unexpected areas, while appearing relatively simple on the surface.

Even something as simple as mining involves a series of complex laws and functions; point at an asteroid and start mining, and you will invoke the mineral content of the asteroid, it's material, mass, how quickly it heats up and how quickly it cools, the rate, heat generated, and extraction bonus of your mining beam, etc. Is the asteroid rotating? Are there Hive in the sector which will take notice and cause you to defend yourself?

The twitch combat is better than in any other game I've played. Engaging another player 1v1 is like a 16th century Samurai duel in space, from staring each other down to the complex martial dance to the final explosion. Add to that group furballs, Border Skirmishes, piracy and anti-piracy, and the picture starts becoming clearer.

At any rate, the balance, end game content, and community has kept my interest since June 2003. I've played this game steadily since then, and have had a subscription since it was possible to subscribe. I guess you could say I'm a fan. I'm enjoying the continuing evolution of this game, and feel honored to have contributed to it. If you haven't already, grab a gamepad and come check this one out. If you've been away for a while, stop back in and see what's new.

There is more to this game than could be discovered in a lifetime.

The Evochron series are really good. Plus you have no loading screens when going to a planets surface.
