Couldn't agree more with the tank header.

It can be devastating to a guild to not have a decent one. Even worse to have a good one (main tank) that leaves for another guild.

Treat your good tanks good, and try to get someone who's in for the long haul.

@teamvernia depends how they go about it; it's never okay to treat another person like shit... especially in a game.

Those are all really good points. If you are making the leap from casual to a raiding guild I think its importan to stress that being a raider is a commitment. If you do not show for a raid, do not take steps to fill your raid slot, you are leavign your teammates hanging. Raiders should always make the best effort to attend their team's raids and be on time.

Another hallmark of a good raider is being flexible in their builds and roles. Being willing to change specs/roles for the good of the team can really increase the success of your efforts. By that same token a raider should always look for ways to eak out another 1-2% DPS or mitigation to help the raid. That means reading up on your specs and trying different combinations.

This is probably the most important part for a casual guild heading in to raiding: doing what you say you're going to do, and if you can't (because shit happens to everyone) LETTING PEOPLE KNOW IN ADVANCE. Otherwise you are ruining 7-9 other peoples' night.

The reason this is so important is because unless your raid dramatically overpowers the content, every man is vital. And finding someone to replace a regular guildie is not always an easy task. Some might not be at level, some might be leaving in 2hrs and unable to commit to the likely 3hrs it'll take, others may not be the right role, and you really don't need four healers...

It forces your guildies to make a decision between calling the ENTIRE thing off because one person didn't show, or going out and looking for a PUG to fill the slot, which carries its own hazards. They may not be any good, might not know the content, might be uber-leet-pro and simply bail on you all in disgust after your first couple wipes, causing you to start again. Many public folks may already be locked out of doing that particular raid because they've already done it with another group, etc, etc, etc. It can take another half-hour of uncertainty, finally ending in calling off the raid, when your guildies quite possibly put other RL events off to the side just to participate in this non-event.

Show a little consideration. Tell people when you aren't going to be there.

Tricky thing about Raiding, mmos typicaly have 3-4 archetypes, so either a third or a quarter of possible guildies will play a tank assuming you didn't pre determine who rolls what class (I assume you don't because that wouldn't be what I call casual).

Now the guild has a whole bunch of tanks that the raid doesn't want. Sure some raids need offtanks and some may even need a couple of those but you never need that many on a regular basis and thats f'ed up because they are a 3rd or 4th of the games archetypes.

Chances are if you're a tank and youre not "the" raid tank you're not wanted for most raiding. Thats just crap for a 3rd or 4th of the archetypes in game.
