Sandboxes very rarely ever do it for me, but I love reading other peoples' experiences with them :)

I might actually try it for real this time, I'm very excited after having read your article. Where is that village people from Massively built?

I have the same problem with Wurm. The game is sooo fun and memorable, until you hit maintenance mode. It then quickly changes from a game to a job.

Sometimes I wish minecraft could meet in the middle halfway between how tedious wurm is, and how easy minecraft is. I bet theirs custom servers for that kinda thing though but who knows..

I finish my stuff in minecraft in a couple days and then i enter into bored mode, where as wurm, it can take months of grinding just to be able to be a priest for example.

It was out before minecraft. Notch was part of the development and quit. He was inspired by Wurm to make Minecraft.

Here's the current map of Independance: http://map.pheonix-enterprises.com/Independence.png

Ma ssively village was in the far north-east and I think it is the one called Hindmania. I went there once when I was a part of CliffSide but it was dead..

Is there pvp? How do you save up money to buy a ship? Do you pve farm? Sell stuff to other players from your crafting? Steal or loot it from pvp? Interesting....

"The thing about MMOs is that most of them are terrible."

So true, so very true. But I think that's ok. I'd rather play an MMO that is bad but fun, rather than a close to perfection boring game. As long as it entertains me, i couldn't care if it's a next gen awesome MMO or some small indy project.

Sandbox mmos are great. I think a lot of people really are used to a different gameplay coming from themeparks, and that's why games like this get a bad rep. It's funny how reading the article, i saw the same issue i'm always faced with.

After getting bored of every sandbox tried, I wanted to experiment a bit. It wasn't in WURM, but in a game with similar concepts. Having a "place to call home" that was always a safe fallback, for a couple of months i just did what was fun, without worrying about material income, losing money or stuffs, or getting into any sort of difficult situations. And when I was left with nothing at all, the decision was made to push on and look for adventure rather than return home to safety. Best idea ever, still doing stuff like that, and even though all games i play are terrible, they're fun and that's what matters.

Have to say, i quite like the article. Would like to hear a bit more about maybe what are generally considered negative aspects of the game that the writer likes. With so much *types of*hate and labeling going around, hearing a honest point of view could be interesting.

And Shawn, if you're open for ideas, don't stop exploring or whatever floats your boat. Settle down with good people, make something, feel good about making that, then pack random things you'll need on the boat, give someone your other stuffs, and go look for more fun. You can always settle down back, or just pop in for a visit, but entertainment should never be blocked by administration.

I know this game is both F2P and has a sub model to it. Can anyone explain how the game plays from a purely F2P stand point and what the differences between the sub/f2p are?

@DerpMchurson

So basically it is another one of the "free endless trials" that basically doesn't allow you to get anywhere unless you sub up?

@Maseno

People play Wurm for years with out going Premium or have gone premium just once to acquire a deed. I convinced some friends to play 6 months ago and they are just now thinking about going premium because up until a week or so ago being F2P had not impeded them.

Hmm from reading the differences it seems like you are cut out from a lot of the content and what not.

It seems that way, but there's still a lot else to do. I found that if you're playing with a group of people (as most of us should be), not everyone has to pay in order for everyone to have a great time playing.

There are some benefits, but in my experience there was no pressure at any point to spend any money. If it's fun enough, that might not even be an issue.
