@pcgneurotic *SOE sucks why u no do this for the PC version. This clearly smacks of SOE's obvious bias and favouritism towards the mac community and I hate all of SOE

*hehe just a little bit of fun and not to be taken seriously ;p

To be a bit more serious this is a cool move by SOE and a nice gesture to what is a small dedicated community of players. *thumbs up*

Now they just gotta do this to EQOA.

You know you want to, Mr. Smedley.

@Snookers

Jeez, I haven't heard anyone talk about this game in years. I remember Beta testing this all those years ago.

I think there are probably less players on EQOA than on EQMAC, but both have their extremely dedicated fanbases.

I know that I would give EQOA another try at the low price of "Free".

@Snookers

I wonder if they ever will. I miss that game :( It felt like they just never gave it a chance. They had bad timing when they released it (not many people even had a network adapter) and just gave up on it.

(From the official SOE forum)

---

Dear EQ Mac players, After hearing all the passionate players asking to keep the server up we are going go ahead and do so. We are also going to make the game free. No subscription and no marketplace either. I'm a passionate Mac gamer myself and at SOE we are interested in putting our new games onto the Mac and are looking into it closely. With any luck when we roll out new Mac games you will take a look if it's the kind of game you're into... Say for example if we make an MMORPG in a familiar fantasy world..... Thanks for the emails and the passion. It matters a lot to us. More than you realize.

Of course, there are always two sides to Sony ;)!

"Record label Sony has apologised for increasing the price of two Whitney Houston albums in the UK, hours after her death on Saturday."

It needs to be pointed out: If Sony is really considering Mac versions of their future games, they're finally seeing the light that Mac gamers are a sizable audience that they can't ignore anymore.

The continued success of WoW on the Mac(I played for five years) proves that there is absolutely no reason for MMOs not to have a native Mac client. A half-assed, Cider-ized Mac port a la Eve Online, no longer makes any sense as it only requires a dev to think beyond Windows customers and realize that the last few years have exploded with new Mac users, enough so that they are a potential audience that should be catered to.

And telling Mac users to 'just run Windows in Boot Camp' is no longer a valid excuse. That's just developer laziness. Asking me to spend $150 or whatever a legit copy of Windows costs these days, just to play their game is a cop-out. We're talking Sony here. They just want to make money. There's an untapped market out there just waiting to spend it. They just have to want to make the effort. If Smedley is serious about Mac versions of Sony games(EQNext?), good for him. And good for gamers.

@Anulla

I would be extremely surprised if future SOE Mac titles were *not* Transgaming based. In fact Smedley said himself: "The mac port is not particulary something we're proud of. The stuff we've done on Free Realms with Transgaming is far superior."

I don't have a Mac and I haven't played EQ for nearly a decade... but this makes me happy. Ridiculously, inordinately happy. Maybe it's just to see a group of people passionate about something not get shafted... it just brings hope, perhaps?

Anyway. This is wonderful news. :)
