If you missed the Winds of Change arc that's bridging the gap between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, now's a great time to head to the official ArenaNet blog to catch up. The devs have provided a handy summary post and a bit of an explanation for their narrative goals as both Guild Wars and its highly anticipated sequel move forward.
ArenaNet also acknowledges the community feedback regarding the difficulty of the Winds of Change content, and the firm says that initially "the difficulty was getting in the way of people enjoying the story, making it far more of a slog than we'd intended and actively undermining their enjoyment of it."
Happily, recent updates have led to "major balance tweaks" and second looks at both normal and hard-mode content, so if you were frustrated before, it's worth your time to give it another go.

It's a shame I didn't get into this game years back. People talk about the great lore, I wish there was a "Lore for Noobs" series for GW, I think it would be beneficial for ones like me, who know nothing about it, but are very interested in lore leading to GW2.

That should be a good starting place for someone. From that page you can find plenty of links that should be helpful depending on how deep into the lore you want to dig, from timelines, to plot synapsis of the various campaigns, to backgrounds on specific areas or events, and so on.

It is also not too later to get in to the game. New people seem to be joining up or returning every day for one reason or another. Learning more about the story and playing through it might not be a bad reason to give it a try.

@drunkingamebar Knowing arenanet, they might actually push out something (vids/articles) to give new people a quick overview. You definitely miss out on the nostalgia and memory of how things were when they mention things from GW1 era (like Duke Barradin)

@drunkingamebar maybe you would like this, its a video blog on Lore. I did play Guild Wars and it is a very detailed and accurate representation of the Lore. It's a bit long but it covers pre-guild wars, guild wars, post-guild wars and pre-guild wars 2.
