Final Fantasy XIV's foods and medicines have always been a major part of the game -- after all, both Culinarians and Alchemists focus on producing precisely those items. Unfortunately, the items have been awkward to make, unwieldy to use, and frequently unclear in their effects. That's why the game's next major patch is bringing along a major overhaul to the system, giving the two categories of item clear roles and more transparent effects.
While the full list of item changes is not unveiled in the preview, the general philosophy is laid out in detail. Food items provide long-term buffs (including a small experience gain) with lesser overall values and a very short cooldown between uses. Medicines, on the other hand, provide a short-term buff with a long cooldown, but the buff is significantly larger. These changes will also tie into a revamp of several recipes to account for ingredient locations and overall synthesis difficulty. It's something to look forward to in the game's next major patch, and it promises to make your character's eating habits much easier to manage.

Nice to see they're still bringing this game around. Hopefully they can do a real turnaround by the time 2.0 hits, because I'm still interested in playing.

@Maseno No. Once servers merge, the average population will be 800-1200 per server with 10 total. That is in no way as bad as Vanguard, and this is before 2.0/PS3 release.
The game won't have millions of subs, sure, but it's already held more players than Vanguard or AoC for example even after the horrible press.

Also unlike Vanguard, the game is still seeing regular and very thorough updates including fixes, revamps, and new content. Whether or not the game gets the sort of playerbase a AAA game should have, at least they didn't lay down and accept their own demise. I, for one, find the game to be much improved after coming back a few weeks ago.

actually the playerbase and devs are very very opinionated about RMT and other forms of cheating, they would just close down the game before it gets to that, vanguard also never had plans to be re-released as an entirely new game and on the ps3 as well.

FFXIV does crafting right IMO. Endgame gear isn't overly powerful compared to a level 50 crafted item filled with Materia, as it should be.

Even though I'm not a crafting person, I agree that the depth of crafting in this game (although it has flaws) is refreshing compared to the very shallow crafting that we see in most modern MMOs. If only the interface for crafting (and everything else in the game) weren't cumbersome and overly menu driven.

Still no way to store a recipe and no recipes to get...I love to craft but FF just makes it so punishing to try to figure out what to make. You have to go outside the game to look it up...but can't ALT+Tab out because that makes the client shut down. Not fun. GIve us recipes and a recipe book and I'm there...100%

@JohnD212 Yea, I was having the same problem. This thread tells you how to alt tab without crashing though until 2.0 hits.
