Global is always off. It is inhabited by PvPers that qq over their misadventures in minigames.

I use only Guild/Group/Raid and watch New PLayer Help if someone is sincerely asking for assistance in which case i send a tell.

@Cylien Oh I don't mind General + Trade being on, as that's how I'd probably hear about a pick-up raid if I was in the mood, but that said, I dim the font of them. In my peripheral vision and when compared to my more important channels, the text scroll blends a bit more into the black background I have them on.

2 or 3. My guild chat, a personal chat (I tell my friends to join it so we don't have to friend 5 alts a piece) and general, if it hasn't pissed me off lately. That's all I'm interested in.

In SWG I would have planetary, faction and Wookiee chats.

22 is the most I have seen so far. In EVE when you are involved in bloc - level warfare (blocs are super-structures consisting of multiple alliances, which in turn consist of multiple corporations), the amount of channels you have to watch can get quite absurd.

Here is a video from a titan pilot of the now defunct Northern Coalition bloc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vX_U8IiNro&list=UU0SHQQsuSukQcD4bXpIBA3g&index=6&feature=plcp
Notice the number of tabs in the lower left. Each represents a separate channel and the players were actually expected to monitor and use most of them. Quite an entangled social system when you think about it.

Most games I just use the default. However, in CoH I ended up with 5 windows (2 are in the base window) with 8 tabs. CoH still has one of the best chat systems I've seen in an MMO.

One window, one tab to rule them all! Although i will make separate guild/party tabs for when i need to focus on those. One tab can get messy but i don't like to clutter my UI with additional windows.

And i like global channels! I don't know if i have a higher tolerance or if other people are overly sensitive, but i don't really see what's the problem with global channels. Even when people argue over dumb things, you don't really have to participate. Just maybe laugh at the stupidity and keep on playing. But it's not typically that bad. It's just people chatting about random stuff, some times even game related!

@Dumac

Yeah, I have to agree. Makes for an interesting distraction at times plus it keeps the world feeling more alive.

I listen to Global a little before I decide whether or not to turn it off. Global chat in WoW was almost always off for me because even on our relatively quiet RP server, it was mostly just like watching a chatroom with a bunch of kids in it. Not usually offensive, bad, or annoying, just...not interesting to me. And I found that turning the channel off made it easier to concentrate on the game world.

Of course it depends on the game and your personal preference (or mood even). It's not like I was never annoyed by global chat, I just don't think it's awful by default.

Usually just 1. A global channel usually takes over to inform me everything and anything. It gets the most traffic and people tend to avoid the LFG or Trade Channels. The global channel isn't restricted to a certain area either. Every now and then I'll check guild chat or team chat when needed.

Hmmm, some of this seems a bit excessive. I tend to stick to the default channels on one tab. I really don't see the point of using all these little side-channels unless you're in an extremely active social community. I can't even imagine having two windows open, way too much going on.

If someone wants to have 5 chat windows open to watch that's their bad decision. I'll respect it, but chances are we won't play on account of different priorities.

Global chats are useless to me. I've been playing MMOs for about 10 years now and what I learned from WoW is that all Global chat was for was Chuck Norris and Vin Deisel jokes.... That's about it. I may be confused with Barrens chat but now every MMO game i play, I immediately make my own chat channels to avoid accidently reading stuff that makes me cringe and hurt my brain.

Guild. Group. Everything else. So 3. I immediately turn off global chat at the beginning of any game.

I create tabs for guild, group and others as needed but generally only monitor the one I'm needing. I do watch global for occasional cheap entertainment and to assist others with valid questions on occasion.

I like the EQ2 screenshot :D

I myself have two chat windows in EQ2 .

Windows one has 3 tabs. One tab is for general, the other is for combat, and the other is for public chat.

The second window is purely for private messages. I once had someone get quite angry that I 'ignored' them when their message to me simply scrolled up when I was AFK'ing. And from that day on I never missed a /tell ever again

Usually one main tab for chatting, and another for combat and other junk I might want to see but don't want spamming my main chat tab.

@(Unverified) Is there ever going to be a way to verify myself? So annoying being unverified all the time. Can't even add an avatar, it just deletes it. =/

I don't know of too many little chat rooms, but I do use what I know.

I generally do have a tab for Global, but I have other tabs that turn it off. I sometimes even have a tab just for local and one just for Party-chat.

Having said that, I seem to keep my number of tabs, along with juggling, down to 3-5. Rarely do I see a need to put only one chat channel under one tab.

Having walked off-topic a tad bit, I know come back to the question of "how many chat channels" once again. I think the most I've had were 9-10; I seem to average 5-7 for most games and yes, if I knew of more chat channels (that sound interesting), I'd probably add them.

The only game that did it right was DAOC ..no global chat at all. Only guilds in your alliance shared a chat channel, and guildmasters could turn off your privileges if you acted an ass, and other GMs complained or something. It kept things at least a little respectful, and no one acted like a douche in our alliance channel just to be douche, because there were actual consequences. We had the best alliance, and people didn't want to get kicked from it, so they kept in line. If you didn't like it, you were free not to join our alliance ..there were others with less strict chat rules..but ours was for pvp and game communication, and that what it was used for.
