This kind of thing seems like it would fit better with spaceships. I wonder how it would feel with character-based avatars.

Maybe with this mechanic now EVE will be able to break the record that other company claimed to achieve with 999 players in a battle.

@Vandal Eve already had muuuch more than 999 players in a battle. Really like hundreds more. I'm not up to the task now to find the biggest one, but if I remember correctly in 2010 there was a fight with 3000+ players in the same solar system. And though I'm calling it a fight, understand it as a 3000+ ppl on a standstill fight =P

How...how do you pigeon hole EVE into one of the most popular MMOs on the market...really? They have had a HORRIBLE Customer Service Department for 2 years running, management that has literally done the best that they can to "adjust" issues, to their handling of the economics with crazy hostile take overs by players exploiting "gliches". And then they ask old accounts to come back only to have a message say "Cant find your password, you lost your account and need to start over sucker...!"

There are so many other MMO's that have a better subscription base and offer a customer service experience worthy of a subscription price, EvE is far from that...Go StarTrek Online and go Black Prophecy! EvE is far from "the most popular MMO" especially after the new FREE TO PLAY business model. EvE is so over...except for maybe the 100,000 of current subscribers still mining away, how is that activity after 5+ years!?

@(Unverified) I think they have some of the best customer service. One of my friends tried the game, and forgot to cancel after there first month. When they were charged, they sent in a ticket asking if they could get a refund as they haven't played that month yet, and CCP refunded them the next day. What company would do that?

Find me one other game with the same sandbox and pvp freedom.

The fact you listed two other spaceship mmos says you have no idea what eve is about. Space and scifi is only a part of the story. A small one at that. The point is the freedom. The ultimate sandbox. The pvp experience no other game can offer.

Last time even tried to pull some of this alternative revenue shit they lost 20% of their employees. So you can take your free to play and stick it up your arse. Of course that is just my opinion. But that is the point. You for some reason believe that everyone shares your opinion and thinks exactly the same way you do. This might come as a shock. But not everyone thinks as you do.
But that is ok. That is why we have a free market with many different games to fulfil every desire.
We have popular games that try to fulfil as many as possible. And fail. But that is my opinion. I think eve is awesome at what it does. And no other mmo comes even close to filling the niche eve fills.
Then again a lot of people cant even fathom playing a game where everything is allowed and backstabbing is encouraged.
So how about we be civilized and we let people with different wishes play games they like instead of calling those game history, pulling completely false numbers out of our asses, and being a general dick.

@(Unverified) EVE is the most-subscribed MMO in North America and Europe after WoW. That doesn't make it ‘one of the most popular’? Does your list end after one?

Have a read of http://eveswarm.com/2012/01/a-titans-folly-the-battle-of-92d/ for a report from a couple of weeks back that saw the time dilation working very nicely on a 1400-ship battle.

Amazing, this IS the place to "vent" or share your thoughts...! Because my personal experiences with EvE doesn't match yours does not make it wrong...Axler...I am not pulling false numbers, just do your homework on the "Life of Eve" and tell me where I was lying...

As for the refund, all MMOs with a "pay to play" business models have a threshold where they can not charge a FULL month if you don't use it. That "gray area" may depend on the company. But how is that great Customer Service, right? I mean that's a "walk in the park" in terms of good Customer Service. I am talking "roll the sleeves up and fix a problem" Customer Service. Like Blizzard and Bioware does so well!

But back to Axler's colorful comments. Particularly the comment on FREE TO PLAY, which you are allowed to have. But some insight, if it is such a bad idea and "bad business practice" then why are so many new MMO's and old die-hard MMO's, going to a FTP model? Hmmm?!?

I would guess you are a veteran EvE player, good for you! Glad EvE found someone to enjoy their game and have a great gaming experience. I do not hold any "personal jabs" to those people as they pay money and are happy with the experience they get for that money. I was NOT one of those people. AND have every right to share that view and not being a general &^%$...! I NEVER said "everyone shares my opinion or view"....I said "MY EXPERIENCE"...

Attacking my "gaming" perspective is...childish. We all game for our own reasons and EvE sucked for me. I am glad you like EvE, stay with it! I've moved on and am VERY HAPPY. And I will ALWAYS voice my frustration with my EvE experience. I have not had that experience with any other MMO - space or not Axler...

Lastly, I wont even address the Customer Service issue because just 10 minutes on any forums with EvE will show, they had / have major issues...educate yourself and R E A D instead of mining asteroids for hours at a time or cornering the isk market! :)

I had your experience the first time I tried EVE in 2007. Then I tried it again in 2010 without the 14 yr old mindset that my hand had to be held and I needed to get everything/be able to do everything instantly with little effort. In short I hardened the F**k up and I haven't looked at any other game since.

About the F2P part.. Eve can be free to play. If you do it right that is.. Eve is one of the only MMOs that allows you to use in game currency to purchase game time. I have known several people that fund multiple accounts with in game currency. The reason the "OLD Diehards" are moving to F2P is because they suck compared to current games and are trying to generate more income. I would much rather pay monthly sub fees to play then have to spend hundreds of dollars trying to be competitive in the game.
On another note.. How many other MMOs have you seen a full on in game riot live streamed on the web??
Eve has its flaws, yes.. But please don't go off half cocked because you had a bad experience. Eve is not for everyone. Especially the 14yo kids who have no patience.

Reading the blog, i couldn't help thinking that CCP might have made the arguably best part of the game actually fun. +1 PR department.
