The Secret World launch is fast approaching (though it may not be exactly when we some are reporting), and plenty of things of things about the game remain, well, secret.
GamesRadar recently cornered lead designer Martin Bruusgaard and sussed out a few details regarding the game's skill deck mechanics. Bruusgaard says the system was designed to offer players a way to get their heads around the game's 500-plus abilities. While there are some recommended decks and combos for newer players, Bruusgaard says the intent behind the The Secret World's classless progression system lies is adaptability and plenty of customization options.
"Some of the beauty of the system is allowing the players to come up with cool stuff themselves. We want to reward the players who dive into this and take their time to tinker with this, and there are lots of cool combinations we will save for these players," he explains.

"when we some are reporting"?

So how do you get the "cards" for these "decks"? Are they drops? Do you get them as level-up rewards? Do you buy them (with in-game currency or actual $)?

@(Unverified) You earn XP through questing, crafting, pvp and so forth. When you get enough XP you get points to spend on the skills. So you could say it has a 'soft' levelling system I suppose. But that is where the parallels with the traditional level system ends.
Some skills can be bought for one point, others require higher amounts. There are no upgrades i.e. Fireball I > Fireball II > Fireball II. All 500+ (570 I believe) skills are unique.

Note that what they're calling decks in this article have always previously been referred to as templates.

Glad they have recommended decks for new players...
..have to see how complete their system is skill-wise to truly use a wide-variety of set-ups and include a way to switch favorite skill sets quickly "on the fly".

I have a strange feeling we are looking at a F2P model with special decks and cosmetic items being purchasable...which would be the absolutely smartest thing they could possibly do.

@Dunraven Decks are just 'suggested' templates, that is all. The business model has been confirmed as subscription with a cash shop for cosmetic and convenience items.

Sorry, wrong on both counts.
They've talked very freely about the cash shop but keep stressing that they have not confirmed a business model. Yeah, I know....
They have also not said that a cash shop would only contain cosmetic and convenience items. They've said it would "mostly" be cosmetic and convenience items. And it could include crafting materials.

I am so very intrigued by this game. I hope there's a beta period (I could've sworn I signed up for a promised open beta for all signers) where I can play a little. I'm guessing there's a monthly subscription and, so far, I really like what I've seen/heard, but I do want to know I'm going to crave playing this game before I drop my credit card down.

@Sean D
"Which kind of bothers me considering I was guaranteed a beta slot to TSW as part of my a paid year's subscription to AoC."
People who purchased the CE version of the AoC expansion were promised the same thing - but they didn't promise WHEN in beta you'd get a slot. So if they give you a slot a week before CB ends and open begins, then they've still fulfilled their promise, shady as it may be.

Seems pretty similar to Guild Wars in the deck building part of the game.
