Y'ever see children in an MMO that aren't creepy looking? WoW maybe did them best, but that game's graphics are rather limited in any case.

There are children in Age of Conan, but they look like skinny dwarfs. Most games do what it does, I think, make child models based on adult models already in game. They never come out quite right, and don't seem to be the product of great effort.

You may have something there, but I also note that not many artists, particularly those that aren't classically trained and, focusing my lens even more, comic book/popular media artists, do not know how to draw children or babies. Even some big names (in the comic book world today) really do not know how to draw kids; they mostly end up looking like midgets.

If we take such "inspiration" and apply it to the new crop of artists, even in MMOs, this seems to bear out. Even 3-D Modelers need to learn the basics of anatomy as a person ages and grows, but many do not seem to learn or care to challenge/improve themselves.
