I can believe it. When I played, there were literally hundreds of bots scattered in every major hub I encountered. It was so bad I could hardly load into areas.

I'd like to see a bot-party, able to survive in new 85+ locations during server primetime...

And how does that account for the increase in revenue?

Anyway, I tried the game for all of 5 minutes. Couldn't get past the click to move thing. Glad to see another game that transitioned from sub to f2p doing well though.

Here's to hoping Vanguard will get the switch flipped so it can go back to being one of the best games released to date (aside from the atrocious launch).

Never understood why VG hasn't had the switch yet, the things they could do with that game if they made the money to do it with...Ugh lol Oh well, I feel like that game and games like it are forever dead and gone.

I'm glad to see L2 is seeing success again, it was my 1st real MMO.

SW:TOR for a looong time for me, and hopefully copernicus is really good...GW2..Hope to see improvements there. I'd love to see a L3 which is very story driven, as I think they've got a really interesting set of lore and a great world for that sort of thing.

@Valentina

Tera is supposedly the "stolen" remade version of L3. That is what the whole NCsoft vs Bluehole/whoever law suit is about.

Only games I am looking forward to now is Salem Online, GW2, and ArcheAge. AA confuses me since on the main page of Massively it says the US version is to be released this year. Seeing that the Korean version has not even released yet I find that very hard to believe.

@Maseno

It won't be released in US or EU in 2012 - that's for sure.

No idea where Massively is putting that date from (well I DO have one idea ,but that would not be pretty to say it :p).

2013 - that's possible.

Anyway - similar here - just waiting for GW2 since it release in 2012 and for ArcheAge (god I really want good AAA p2p open world like game like AA so much !)

@smartstep

ArcheAge doesn't have a western publisher, so it can't launch in NA or EU at all at the moment.

The revenue comes from Brazilians and other foreigners. Seems to be unplayable for English speakers if you choose to go on the new servers.

When they say "Truly free", do they mean that none of the microtransactions they have (or might have) are in no way needed to advance in the game or even make it easier?

once a game goes f2p or whatever the entire game is only focused on making you pay at the item shop like a filthy cheater, glad that no matter how the writers of this site want unbalanced mmos, sub based games will always be the best way to spend your monthly game allowance.

I am aware of that, well, with the exception of Guild Wars. However, I have never seen the term "Truly free" used before, and considering Lineage 2 is done by NCSoft, the same publisher as Guild Wars, I was curious if they used GW's same model. That of only selling vanity items as well as other products that can just as easily be acquired in game for free rather than unique, game changing items.

I would love to get passed the click to move, no jump thing, but I can't. I used to love this game till I first played an MMo that didn't have click to move. Haven't been able to go back to these sorts of games ever since (except diablo clones or some such)

@Kalec

It's not so much that it's click to move (as I've played a number of MMOs that are click to move and never thought twice) or that there's no jump mechanic, it's that the controls themselves are terrible. I've yet to play an MMO with such shoddy controls/camera.

I tried playing L2 in a private server a few years ago after my friend begged me to join, I quit 30 minutes later due to the controls. And this was coming off of playing Mabinogi (click to move, no jumping) for 6 months. When L2 became F2P, I figured I'd give it another shot. Played for a few hours, same deal. Bailed due to the controls, as did my other friend who was giving it a try.

Maybe it's just me, but moving in that game seems wonky as hell.

This is a bit misleading. There has most definetly been an increase in players, but not as many as implied. There have been a series of events leading up to the quarterly report the heavily encouraged people to create/bot new accounts and characters which led to a few servers being full 24/7 and resulted in those events being canceled prematurely by ncsoft.

Also the increased revenue is to be expected, but is no where near maintainable. Prior to the release of f2p, ncwest fired almost a hundred people which included the lineage 2 producer and numerous other staff members. The game has been running on a skeleton crew for almost 5 months now. Ncwest has also gone through a series of bait and switch cash shop promotions that has artificially increased profits that in no way reflect customer trends. First they released a subscription event where people gained ingame items for subscribing for 1 to 3 more months.... days before the transition into free to play.

Next, there was an event to pre-purchase bonus packages with highly desirable in game items for a limited time... only for the timer to expire and the bonus items to not be removed but replaced with even better items. At this point, ncwest has already sold us the best possible consumable scrolls in the game at 45 dollars a hit and this trend will end fairly quicky as they simply have nothing left to sell us through this promotion.

The next big seller is an important one. Ncsoft first sold us 50% exp runes, then 100%, and now 200%, at increasing prices. Pre-"free to play", it cost 15 dollars a month to play lineage 2. It now costs 80 dollars to receive the same exp bonuses that you got for free pre-f2p. 50% exp runes cost 15 dollars A WEEK, and to maximize exp you have to buy 5 maintance potions for 5 more dollars a week. If you want to use the 200% runes, it's even more.

Now, 50% exp may not seem like a lot to other mmo players, but the grind at 85+ in lineage 2 is intense. A free to play player simply can not and never will compete with the players who use the 50% runes.

So while lineage 2 is advertised as free to play forever, it is anything but. You will shell out lots of money for exp boosts if you want to have access to any kind of content and be competitive at any level. The current level 90+ players completely destroy every single player below them, and there is no way to catch up without paying 20 dollars or more a week plus grinding 5-10+ hours a day. It's important to note that level 85+ players can't use the 200% runes, only the 50. So new players are sucked into a fairly easy game, with little grind thanks to all the pre-85 exp bonuses, and then they hit a huge wall at 85+. With the massive bot problems, things aren't looking good and ncwest has failed to address them in any meaningful way in over 4 months.

The next quarterly report is going to be extremely distressing, as the current profit trend will not be maintained. But for today, I guess cheers?

And the funny thing is that the xp boosts that you can buy have time limits on them that run even when you're not in-game.

You'll often find yourself not even being able to log in to make use of those xp boosts that you've bought because the servers are full of all the bots and people logged in afk just to capitalize on various game systems (mentor system, events).

One way that NCSoft could alleviate this problem is to actually enforce their EULA and ban bots and 3rd party program users (programs that automate targetting and general gameplay, particularly in PvP), but after 8 years of this game's operation and despite numerous assurances by company officials otherwise, NCSoft doesn't do anything about bots/cheaters.

So, when you buy an xp boost item, you'll be lucky to actually use even a quarter of the time on it before it expires. And don't expect any real kind of reimbursement, either. Any reimbursement they offer won't be anywhere near the value of what you initially paid for.
