Nice writeup. As an older MMO player, I have some fond memories of those bygone days when the themepark formula wasn't so standard in these games.

Sure, designing away all the "un-fun" stuff in an MMO isn't in and of itself a bad thing... but there's a certain charm that's been lost in the process. The vast, pixelated wastes of Asheron's Call are more compelling than all the planets of SWToR, if only because they grant that sense of being in a sizeable and unrestricted world.

Anyway, I'll try Planeshift out tonight. Get my nostalgia on for a few days.

I've tried this game a few times over the years, never stay long. It's a pity it didn't get the energy behind it way back in it's early days when there would have been some kind of chance for something to have actually come out of it. It's a bit too late now... Maybe time to move on to a whole new project.

Can't remember how long ago I first tried Planeshift but it must have been almost a decade ago. I've never done more than walk about for a while and then log out, somewhat confused.

It's nice to hear that it's still going. A quick check shows me I have it installed on this PC, which means I must have downloaded it (again) in the last three years, but I can't recall playing it that recently. Not sure i am likely to change that any time soon. If I want an old-school MMO experience I'll usually fire up Crowns of Power.

(And as an aside, I listen to the radio while I play MMOs and always have done, and I often listen to 1930s radio shows, although not Little Orphan Annie. And I haven't owned a television for many years :P )

I can't believe it's still going. I remember when it was on my list of upcoming games to watch, then eventually went opensource if I remember correctly?

I haven't popped on in at least five or six years I guess, but I remember always logging in and trying to find the actual game.

Good find, it reminded me of a few other games that I'm not sure if you've looked into or not, which blipped out or were sadly never released/finished such as 'Dragon Empires' and the 'Lejendary Adventures' MMO (which sadly brought me to this over enthusiastic post from '04 as I tried to dig up old info:

Anyway, thanks, and keep digging them up :)

This is still in Alpha? Then you would think the end-result would be the equivalent of HL3 for MMOs.
