Call it non-subscription then. F2P is a bad term I agree, but it is probably something the marketing droids came up with. In any case it is obviously a healthy option.

@donweel nothing inherently wrong with the term F2P, the issue that there are so many flavours of F2P that its gone from being a category of MMOs to a family of MMO categories. Not to mention that most people ascribe their own interpretation to 'Free' and 'Play'.

For example let's take "no-subscription", would that mean that games that have freemium models are no longer F2P? There is a no-subscription option sure, but there's also a premium subscription option, so we enter the wonderful world of semantics (which isn't nearly as fun as semiotics mind you). That's not to mention B2P or endless trial options.

It's probably just easier to keep using F2P but within a more accurate context.

@(Unverified) The fact that free to play is very misleading, more or less it's free to try out. You can't have fun when all the good things are locked out, they are locked out because they are running a business. Should be "Try for free".

@drunkingamebar

"You can't have fun"

That's entirely subjective. There are quite a few F2P MMOs that are enjoyable without spending a cent. It's pretty telling that people complained about City of Heroes being "free to try" because you had to subscribe to get access to the absolute endgame raiding content, completely ignoring that literally everything else except for First Ward was free.

@Ehra I should have added you can't have fun unless you play very casually.

its funny, anyone who agrees with f2p would never had made it on OG EQ1, because you actually had to play the game, sorry no item shop to give you a short cut.

There are already two accepted terms for it... microtransaction and freemium...
