While many players are celebrating the announcement of EverQuest's upcoming free-to-play transition, there is one EQ community that was crushed by the news. The small but dedicated fanbase of EverQuest: Macintosh Edition found out that with F2P, EQMac and its one server would be sunsetted on the same date.
EQMac fans have begun to stage a campaign to save their favorite game, but it looks like there will be no budging SOE's mind on the matter. SOE President John Smedley took to the forums today to answer specific questions about the shutdown. "It breaks my heart to have to do this," he laments, before admitting that it's a done deal. Smedley cites the fact that the codebase is so ancient that only one SOE programmer knows how to work it, the player population is too small, and SOE was never that "proud" of the version.
However, Smedley promised that he will run a poll to see if there's enough interest in a Mac port of the current version of EverQuest. If the response is big enough, he says, the company will consider doing it. Meanwhile, the game will be available for current players free of charge until the March 29th shutdown. SOE has a celebration planned for its final hurrah.
EQMac came out in 2003 and was unique for remaining "frozen in time" in the years since, receiving no further active development or expansions. We will be covering this game and its shutdown more in-depth in a future Game Archaeologist column, so stay tuned.

Since it requires no maintenace why not keep the server up as it is. P2w is killing this genre

Truly a shame. I almost bought a mac just to play on this server a few years back. Why don't they understand that there's no interest in what they call Everquest now, people want to play the EQ from 1999-2004.

You might be on to something! Which is why they created the progression server with the original rule set.

The progression server doesn't have the original ruleset, it has the original set of content with the same rules as every other server.
@ Maseno
I play on project 1999 from time to time. It's fun, but it's not the same as if it was official. Trying to get friends to install the right version and tweak the config files to connect is also a tall order.

News flash, Mac people too cheap and dumb to buy a lowend Windows based system to play EQ that has only been out since 1999/2003. But hey go stand in line for the next overpriced unit for a slicked over unix install and pay out the nose.

@Amusednow Newsflash. Those same people could easily bootcamp Windows, and likely do so for other games.
It was stated earlier that the reason they like the mac client is that it's about as close to classic EQ as you're likely to get outside of a private server.

Nice to see that the massively readers are mature enough not to rag on people who make a different choice in computer hardware to them

One of the best decisions I ever made was to buy a Mac. I have saved so much money over the years not buying games, because they were unavailable without bootcamp, and I refuse to put Windows on my machine.
I can play every Blizzard game, I played WAR for a long time and I have played CoH for years and even EQ Mac I re-sub for every once in a while.
All of the other recent MMOs like Rift, Star Wars, Conan, etc. I probably would have bought and sunk money into. Lots of money saved, I am not complaining.

It would be neat if they spent the money and converted this over as well as making the same 'old school' available for PC, but I can understand the costs involved on such an undertaking.
Hopefully they will sink money into Vanguard, that is a game I would definitely play if it went F2P.

Funny how they only have one person who understands the code and yet the Project 1999 guys are fine lol.

@Miffy The guys that run the P99 server are emulating the classic game with more recent clients from three or four expansions ago. It's not the same deal.

I'd like to see SOE take the Mac more seriously. EQ Mac was a joke, since it separated the player base. You weren't an EQ player, you were a Windows player of a Mac player. If you happened to own both (like a Windows desktop and a Mac laptop), you lacked the ability to just play on one world with either platform.
Blizzard, and now Valve do things really right. Day and day Mac/PC releases, on the same servers. Portal 2 was nice since I could play it on my laptop, or on my gaming PC. Didn't matter. Above the platform choice, I am a gamer first.
Why bash someones choice of a platform? All that does is push people out of the community, vs having more gamers to play with. Choice is a good thing.

The brilliant thing about the Mac server was that it was basically the original version of the game in its glory days -- up until the Planes of Power expansion. Most of the rest of the expansions weren't anywhere near as good as those original three and the original game. It was like a small piece of gaming history.
I wish companies like SOE would decide to just open source something like that, so long as it's not for profit. I don't think it would hurt game sales at all, even if a port of the current version of the game was made for Macs. If anything, it would only serve to spur further interest in the current game.
