Good riddance. Now if only more games would do this. I'm tired of getting into a game of LoL and having some idiot on my team speak no english and feed.

Never thought this article would bring out the racists. But apparently they're crawling out of the woodwork over this.

@Utakata How is it racist? I play on the North American Server. That's French, English, and Spanish.

There are two Europe servers and multiple Asian servers in League of Legends. Why are they on my server?

Racism is the belief that one "race" is inherently better than an other. I'm not saying that English/Whites are better than Asians, I'm saying that I'm tired of getting into a TEAM based game and having my teammates not speak my language. This is forgivable if their from French Canada or a Latino nation.

If their from Asia, play on an Asian server. It's better for them, they get to play with people who speak their language, it's better for us, we don't have to play with team mates who don't speak our language.

@Utakata And you're apparently not aware of the definition of "Racist" if you think anything I said was so. Might want to learn that before you go around calling people it.

That or you're fluent in the use of straw mans.

I'm honestly not sure which is worse....

@Utakata Honestly it seems more Exclusionist.

As for me, you can speak whatever language you wish.

I play healers mostly.

If you're sharp enough to stay out of the 'bad stuff' on the ground and not pull hate, you can speak the binary language of moisture evaporators for all I care.

You wouldn't know what a strawman was if it bit you in the ass. So put a sock in it.

@Cyroselle

"Exclusionist". That's a nice euphemism. I'll have to remember that one for the future.

@Utakata Still haven't looked up the definition of "Racist" have you eh? My bad, I took you for someone who actually cared to make intelligent posts and enlighten themselves, I guess you're just another child who cries RACISM everytime someone says something remotely offensive.

Or you're trolling. But then again, a troll would make better posts.

It's a game, dude. I have plenty of friends that I do plenty of activities with, I don't need virtual ones to kill polygons with. If you get immersed and create relationships with people you've never met and never will meet when playing these games then more power to you. I only consider a friend someone I can spend actual time with.

Every friend I've made in an MMO I've lost as soon as I stop playing the game and move on to another one they don't play.

As for the IP blocking, it's a deterrant whether you want to admit it or not. Setting up a proxy for a gold farming operation increases their operating budget and makes it less appealing to farm that game. Why spend money to make money farming TERA when you can do it for free in WoW and multiple other games?

This won't affect the military as they already connect through a proxy (Unless they are connecting from outside the base)

Every guild I've ever been to in every game has been American and full of Americans and Canadians, btw and not because I go out of my way to join just American guilds.

This right here got me brainstorming.
If you think about it now they have both IP blocking and Chronoscrolls (EVE's PLEX). So with Chronoscrolls they force the gold seller to sell for a lower price and take some of his customers away anyway because most people would rather buy gold in a legal risk-free way.
IP blocking increases the gold seller's operating budged thus reducing his profits, in addition it increases the gold seller's latency because of the proxy so he gets less gold per hour thus reducing his profits even more.

Maybe they are onto something here, this may reduce their numbers.

I still hope the Frogster doesn't block these regions for the EU version though, people there want to play too.

@fdisk There is a large community of expats living in Asia as workers. Myself being one of them. I have followed my friends from game to game and used the game as a fun way to keep in touch instead of sitting on Skype staring at a webcam. The decision to block people seriously limits NA expats who are living in a language restricted environment already. The people who speak Asian languages are not that interested in playing on the NA servers. Gold farmers are and that is the problem. I do not know how to set up a proxy and I have no access to a navel base. So this will be the first time I will have to make a decision to forgo on a game I was excited about or give up my friends who I have invested real time with in-game for the past 6 years. This decision hurts more people than some of you care to realize.

I know, it's crazy isn't it? Even now, 'Europe' basically means 'France, Germany, Spain and the UK'. To be fair, it's better than it used to be pre-EU (from Polish perspective), but it's still crap.

I can see why people might be upset, but it's hardly going to effect my enjoyment of the game. My enjoyment will be determined by the quality of the game's systems and mechanics and not by the level of enjoyment felt by other people. TERA's devs at EME are going to do what they feel is right for their product, and any decision they make may either serve them well or lead to their downfall, time will tell, but these internet fortune tellers are no wiser than anyone else, and like the rest of us have no better than a 50/50 chance to be either right or wrong. As for the phenomenon of contradicting plans you'd previously had - since when are companies not allowed to change their minds about policy?

Love them or hate them, you can't really fault them for trying to do what they think is right, unless you're egocentric of course in which case you go around faulting people for doing things you disagree with on a regular basis which will eventually land you a set of blackened eyes and a broken nose. That is of course assuming you only do it on the internet, which is something else entirely, and I think we all know what that one means.

Of course IP blocking non-American regions will not realistically cause the downfall of Tera, or any other games out there. IP blocking is a standard practice, EME is at fault here because of the reason for doing so : to block hackers. .. that's just beyond silly as any one played ip blocked MMO will tell you the system fails at achieving its purpose.

The official message from EME lacks common sense in other ways too. It mentioned about "licensing detail " but the rest of the paragraph is devoted to painting a picture of that the majority players connecting from places other than the American continent are hackers and Bots. It's also amusing to consider how many other MMO EME has experience of running to justify their claim of IP blocking being effective.

In the end I think this is just a pretence written by someone who doesn't care about the company's PR. There are quite a few legitimate reasons for ip blocking btw, such as providing better connection speed for the local players, and the aforementioned "licensing details" that they failed to explain.

I love the amount of ignorance in this decision and the people trying to justify a pretty horrible judgement call. IP-blocks are a terrible way of saying we can't police our own game and we want to alienate gaming communities. I look forward to hearing about all the bots that show up with gold farmers seeing as its not like this is impossible to get around and only affects legitimate players.

Sad but true,it won't.And I'm sure the same persons who are so enthusiastic about this decision now will be back here QQing a few months after launch when their servers will be infested with "those that they don't want to ruin their game".
