Nothing surprising.

After all SOE said that it will switch completly to freemium.

So imo - in next 1-2 years all of their games will either will be converted to freemium or shut down.

Well - I won't need to think about SOE anymore. Since I learned through experience I cannot stand playing freemium games (game revolving around store + store being huge imersion breaker) I will have comfort of just skipping all SOE games, will not have to waste time thinking - is this game good enough to try play it or not.

I'll definitively be cheking out one of the grandaddies of the genre.

So, when is the conversion going to take?.

"So, when is the conversion going to take?."

You could try actually reading the article they linked. I know it's an extra click, but I'm sure you have the time.

Very nice! Hopefully they keep putting out new progression servers on FTP!

@Andurin

indeed. once kunark opens up i'll probably quit as the population gets decimated. altho maybe with f2p numbers it wouldn't be so bad? i dunno how many post 2004 MMO'ers will be able to deal with its crazy interface.

When I left EQ, my character was L65 (the cap at the time)... coming back only to level up 30 more times seems daunting.

How easy would it be to get back into the swing of things?

@Noah K

Much easier than you had it to 65, plus there are good AI mercs you can hire in-between groups. :)

Nostalgia is right!

And heck, if I were a betting man, I'd have bet that EQ1 would've beat its younger sibling to the F2P gate...and I woulda lost! :(

I will be first to express my amazement that there are still people playing Everquest.

@Funkoid There are still people playing UO and even Meridian 59 I believe. It would not suprise me if people still played MUDs. There is a decent sized market for retro gaming.

My friends and I shall surely return to the world of Norrath when this happens. We've missed those unique game-altering powers like Call of the Hero and Headshot, clickies that give cross-class skills, clever things you could do with shrouds, and even the pacifist characters we played to level 39 without killing anything. Other games seem so concerned about balance that they've eliminated the fun of devising strategies to use myriad powers in clever ways. Thank you for doing this, SOE!

Neat.

Although it was so long ago, I doubt my account data even exists -- if I could even remember it!

@Joaquin Crowe

I was wondering the same... if my dark elf cleric still exists I'd love to at least log in and take a look around, but remembering my username & password from over 10 years ago is the tricky party!
