Just in case speculation for Guild Wars 2's launch date wasn't running quite rampant enough, Amazon.de has begun taking pre-orders for the game. Furthermore, the site claims a launch date of June 30th, 2012.
Community members have already picked up on it, but is there truth in the date? We checked in with NCsoft West for the official word: "We have not released an official launch date within 2012 as feedback from our closed and open marketing betas will help us determine an exact release date. We will release Guild Wars 2 when it is ready."
We do know that the Guild Wars 2 development team is revving up for plenty of beta testing in February, March, and April, and the company has confirmed that GW2 will launch this year.

Amazon.de also claimed to know exactly when Diablo III was launching...
Because, of course, a german website would know about American game releases before *anyone else in the world.*
Massively, please don't feed the trolls.

@Macabre 13 I think they just want more hits than any sort of reaction.

@Macabre 13 one theory is that a game release date is actually known a very long time before they're made public and that these release dates are shared with all the relevant parties. The second part of the theory then is that a foreign party (such as German Amazon) doesn't get the memo that it has to be kept hush hush, or someone along the line uploads the wrong but right information and so it is made available to the general public. But yeah it's a bit far-fetched.

I don't believe there is any reason to post this. We all know that Amazon.de doesn't know jack about a release date. Once they have one it will be announced, and not through Amazon...

I can think of one good reason to post this, and it's so that Massively isn't inundated with thousands of tips from people who aren't informed about how pre-order "release dates" usually work. It's been acknowledged and there's a place to discuss it.

Serious question.
When has amazon been right about an unannounced launch date ever?

Seriously, Amazon (and many other retailers) start preorders early with a COMPLETE GUESS for a release date, this isnt even news.

Well, this is "par for course".
I think Gamestop also had a launch date for SWTOR that was earlier on; basically all dates are tentative.
They probably got an approximation of a launch date from some source who heard it from some other source in the division of publishing from someone's nephew in the corporate office.
The date is mildly interesting in that it pegs things down, but it could also be wrong, even gravely wrong, as has happened with such things before. But...it does look like a 2012 release....sans soccer jerseys.

@Space Cobra I work at Gamestop. They have so many games in for pre-order with hokey dates simply so they can be pre-ordered, the only time a release date is accurate is when the company officially announces it and there are posters and ads everywhere. I pre ordered GW2 CE 2 months ago for 79.99 and it says the release date is march 1st. obvs not going to happen.

I'd like to point out that the whole last year Amazon said that GW2 release would be "2 November 2011", and since I'm not playing the game right now I'm assuming that both statements are false.
Seriously, don't take retailers date seriously. >_>

I m so proud of massively.com for the expert reporting on news.

June 30, 2012
september 30,
december 31
Did you ever consider that June 30, 2012 is the end of the 3rd quarter? Just like how gamestop uses dates such as march 31 and december 31 for games without release dates?

We've seen gamestop, amazon, a million websites post estimated release dates hundreds of times. They just use the 'fake' dates to allow for preorders to be sold. We've all seen it before and they all change the dates once the real release has been confirmed.
This date can give us an approximate of what quarter to expect the games release. I don't know if any quarter has been confirmed yet though. Just take it for what it is... not a real date.

there is no way anyone should believe that. no matter how much i want to believe it. still what a random retailer says is not as official as the company making the game saying when its coming. please let it be soon.

Nah, if it turns out to be true, it will be pure coincidence. There is just no way they could know this, plus the announcement of a release date for GW2 will (no doubt) have a *huge* marketing drive coupled to it.
Also (purely IMHO), I think it a bit folly to pre-order now anyway. We don't have a release date and we don't know any details about special releases like collectors editions etc. Also, the only party who's benefiting from your pre-order money right now, is Amazon. (i.e. You're not doing ArenaNet any favours.)
I'd rather have the money in my bank than theirs ... at least until we have a concrete date as announced by ArenaNet themselves. Anything other than that is pure speculation.

Considering what was said about how the "original intentions" were to have the third novel out before the release of GW2 in the Guild Wars Insider article a couple of months ago when they were talking about how the change of author pushed the date back to August of this year, this is actually a tentative release date I can believe is close to the mark.
