@Yarr

YES, definitely need an option to play old login screens/music. I long for the Burning Crusade theme, loved that one the most.

Even EQ2 has changed their log in music around over the years and I liked them all.

I don't particularly enjoy Aion, but its music certainly belonged on the list.

Lineage II also has some spectacular music and should be on the list even if gameplay is grind, grind, grind.

City of Heroe/Villains probably doesn't deserve a place on the list overall.
However the music written for the Going Rogue expansion and subsequent issues deserves more than honorable mention, it really is excellent. You can check it out on ittunes.

How is DAoC not on this list? o0

nr. 1 rule for a good theme: it has to be hummable!

so what's with some of these really weird ones in 11-20 compared to the ultra hummable DAoC tune... *scold*

also, too bad this was just about theme songs... because this piece right here is probably the most beautiful piece of music I've heard in an MMO:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3dPApPyIGs

otherwise good list. I personally prefer EQ2's orchestral version of the theme (i never played EQ so i got no nostalgia feelings about that 8bit theme :P) but hey to each their own

still though... no DAoC... pffft!

That any top MMOG music list it is a shame not to include Age of Conan. Say what you will about the game, it has perhaps the best sound track in the industry, the composure having won several awards 'just' for this soundtrack.

One could say that perhaps.. perhaps.. GW2's soundtrack is better, but it'd be damn close. If this wasn't based on theme song, I think it'd get first or second place simply for Helene Boksle's stunning 'Ere the World Crumbles'.

I've always loved the theme song for Vanguard Saga of Heroes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t18zWmxaMoI&feature=related

beginning around the 1:20 mark and going to the 2:30 mark is one of the most beautiful sounding heroic fantasy melodies I've heard in a game in my opinion.

You mention "Faith of the Heart", but not that it's the odd song out of the entire Star Trek franchise?

I wouldn't compare something to the song that is the most un-Star Trek song in the entire series history. It's a good song on it's own, but it's not a Star Trek theme. And it was attached to the most criticized Star Trek series.

STO's theme is good, but up until 1:30 it's essentially a mix of different Star Trek themes. You can recognize TOS, DS9 and TNG pretty clearly. Not that this is a BAD thing, that's a good thing for this theme music. But using it to call out other Star Trek themes, especially when you used Enterprise's theme as the example, seems a bit off.

After reading/listening to this list all in a row, it really just makes them all sound 89% the same.

Fantasy Music Tropes anyone?
Quick get me a little tympani and brass! Sweet now sweeping up-tempo's from the strings!

@Beltyra Is this the part where we all start complaining that games even clone the WoW music?

Allods online is a pretty good themesong. Too bad the game sucks.

Star Trek Online theme sucks up until about 1:30 on that vid, then it gets good. Another crap game.

Ultima...nah, Runes of magic...nah, GW1 and GW2, heck yeah!

Really good list, these themes are all good, several I hadn't heard since I never played the games.
Very surprised Rift didn't make the list at all?! It definitely has a better theme than over half of the 1st 10 and as good IMO as some of the top 10.

I agree with Guild Wars 2 but you totally failed to include any of the Age of Conan soundtrack!

Listen to this...

or

and tell me that doesn't deserve a place in any soundtrack top 10!

Oh there was another part, I see. I wondered why it said there are my top 20 tracks when there was only 10. Still, number 19?!! ;)

Another great one that hasn't been mentioned yet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4cqFHnOx8Q&feature=related

West Tundara (Dark), from Lime Odyssey. West Tundara (Light) is awesome, as well.

But, as far as I'm concerned, Lineage 2 remains the undisputed MMO champion of soundtracks.

Just a couple quick notes:

- As the article says, this is the second part of a Top 20 countdown, so themes to games like FFXI and AoC are there, just in the previous list.

- Trust me, I listened to as many themes as I could and then some. I basically spent an entire day earlier this month doing little else than that. Name an MMO, I most likely looked up the theme and gave it a chance. I tried hard to give the smaller, more offbeat titles a chance too.

- For a game to not be on the list doesn't mean it's bad, just that it wasn't my personal (top 20) favorite. I wasn't that enchanted with Aion's theme (and despite what my fan said, I haven't talked about Aion since, well, 2009 on my blog), DAoC was one of the last ones cut so it almost made it, and I really didn't care for FFXIV, RIFT, or Vanguards. Again, personal taste.

I'm enjoying reading which ones are your favorites, however!

The list was a great read, regardless of some of my personal favorites not making it. And I was introduced to some nice music I would have never heard otherwise in the process :)

@(Unverified) - 2009 is when I stopped reading Bio Break, for that very reason. ;p

After seeing, listening to some of the games that didn't make the list, I'm thinking this could (should?) have been a Top 40 list, instead of 20. :)

Was my favorite from FFXI. It had such a huge musical score and more then one theme for the game.

Well, a title of "Perfect 10" is a little misleading if its actually a list of 20...

To me, Guild Wars: Prohpecies (and Factions for that matter) theme song always embodied the magical world they represent. Very few songs get my created juices flowing like Guild Wars. Jeremy Soule is a master.
