Glad to see Ryzom won! You're in for a good time. Ryzom is quite different from most games we know.

I think Ryzom should have gotten a bigger shot, I just dont think the heart was in drawing much attention to it. I had alot of fun, the crafting was wild, when released the graphics werent bad at all, and it was VERY different. Maybe ill go find it again.

You could explain more about the starting packages, especially the last two... Well, I know that the words can brief it well, but what they can really do in the beginning?

@Archintyeron The staring packages don't mean a lot in the grand scheme of things. They will just give your character a leg up in whichever direction you are thinking of going. If you choose the Fighter package you will get a second attack stanza for extra damage, the magic package gives you the Fear spell, the Foraging and Crafter packages also give you and extra ability. But you can get any of these later on as you customize your character through leveling.

This will be very exciting! Ryzom is an amazing and hidden away game. Whatever you think of it, I hope that these columns will inspire people to try it out. It deserves a lot of love!

After reading the manual, I have to agree that the Zorai seem very cool. The Tryker are a bit too cutesy, but I like their peaceful culture. As for what to start off with, I voted for magic as your basic package. Better to get a foot in combat skills to defend yourself and the like for when you end up dabbling in foraging and in turn crafting. And once more the last poll is baffling.

Glad Ryzom managed to squeak through. Of all the choices this is the one I know absolutely nothing about. It sounds a little complicated from the initial description but also quite intriguing so will be following this one closely.

@Balraw

If you want to give it a go, it's free to play up to a certain level. They remade the starter island a while ago to make it more newbie-friendly, but you are right - the game can be quite complicated. But that's part of its charm. Give it a try!

Before I vote I did a quick check for some videos of character creation and found a decent one on YouTube (note: video has some swear words so NSWF in some cases), but it does give a good quick look at character creation.

He also has two small vids of the starter area and all three cover some basics including the starter package.

Voting Zorai and Craft :)

Is this game still severely limiting if you do not subscribe?

I remember trying it and hit lvl 20 or something and wasn't able to move forward without subbing.

@Maseno Not anymore. The limitation is level 125 that is a very long journey before reaching the limit and even after, you can continue to play, you'll just not earn more XP.

@acemtp Also it could take quite a loooong time to get all your skills to level 125, so you will still be able to play a viable character with goals to achieve.

Interested in checking this out myself. From the looks of it on paper it seems like something I would enjoy. But then again, other games have done that in the past.

We'll see once I download it later on after work.

Good to see Ryzom get some attention. It's certainly a unique game, strangely beautiful and with a flavour very much its own.

I couldn't really get into it myself, even though I really tried for a while. Despite the freedoms of the skill system and the (rather) open world, I found it to be quite limiting in certain ways, i.e. lacking when it came to real sandbox features. Also, the grinding bored me after a couple of weeks.

On a side note, I got the feeling the game is practically run by a small gang of vets who's been around since forever, which is both good and bad I guess. Some of the vets seemed extremely helpful - almost no other game has flooded me with so many friendly whispers after a simple question in public chat - while others came off as snobby, intolerant douches with very preconceived notions about how Ryzom "should" be played.

@TitusGroan

You'll have that in any small community. The smaller the community, the more each individual voice is heard and considered. This combined with the overwhelming sense of self-entitlement nowadays means a small subset of people believe themselves to be pivotal for that game's future.

@TitusGroan Sadly , all MMO's attract that unsavory type of person, but Ryzom is filled with some very kind and helpful people and you can make new friends quite easily. If you get to the mainland and need a weapon ask for Ezex. Hes a Looong time Vet who spends a lot of time just Foraginging to make weapons for new arrivals. he is as powerful as he is nice.

"My own experiences with Ryzom are constrained to a single set of experiences back forever ago in the free trial. The funny thing is that they were, by and large, very positive experiences, enough to make me wonder why it is I never went any further in the game. Certainly it wasn't a lack of interest in the game as a whole. I think, looking back, it was simply a matter of the scope of the game versus the other things I already had on my plate."

That sums up my own experience of the game very well. I'll be interested to see what you make of it. Hope you have fun!

The bonus poll cracks me up as I am listening to the Lost soundtrack right now, rofl. So, of course I picked a character from Lost option. Miss that show....
