If you're playing Final Fantasy XI on your PlayStation 3, you might want to head to Gamer Escape to get the details on an upcoming hardware tweak.
The website reports that sometime in February, Sony will release a system update for the PS3 that will increase the hard drive space necessary to run the PlayStation 2 version of FFXI. PS3 models that feature 60GB and 20GB drives are the only units being affected, but it's worth noting because the FFXI client will require an additional 9GB of space after the patch (21GB total).
The PS2 version of FFXI isn't changing, nor is the Windows version, so don't sweat it if you're not playing the title on your PS3. If you are, though, the source article is worth a read. As of press time, Square-Enix hasn't divulged a reason for the space increase.
[Thanks to Andrew for the tip!]

Is it just a large patch of some sort? I'm quite confused on what exactly is going on.

It's extremely puzzling, since patching FFXI has always been about getting all the new content into the limited HDD space of the PS2. I could understand this if they finally gave PS3/PC a "HD remake" version, but they seem to explicitly exclude PC ... It just makes no sense ...

Run to the hills, FFXI-2 is actually coming.

FFXI-2 would actually be really awesome. I wish that is what we had gotten instead of XIV. Or even just an HD remake of XI, and then expand on it from there ~ especially all the continents mentioned in the lore and by NPCs that were never visited!
So much potential, yet they're ruining it with Abyssea and trying to save that disastrous XIV....le sigh!

@Khalus Seconded, Third'd, Fourth'd, and Fifth'd.
Although FF14 is actually playable and an ok MMO now, after all the patches, an HD FF11 with continued HD expansions would have been WAY better.

@Khalus. They are making FFXIV into an amazing MMO. You sound extremely ignorant and really shouldn't be giving your opinion on a game you know nothing about.

No, FFXIV is not playable yet. All the patches so far have been lipstick on a pig. There's still no plot, no purpose other than repeating mindless, plotless Leves. I would know, I've played the damn game from release till they started charging money for it earlier this month (which I promptly cancelled).
FFXIV still isn't out yet, but I'm still not convinced from what I've seen so far. The whole thing needs to be scrapped in favor of a kind of FF-themed World of Warcraft clone, otherwise it's going to be a miserable failure.

I didn't even know that they finally brought this over to the PS3.
Well, it certainly is possible for me to try it out...eventually.

they didn't bring it over to the ps3. it's just early model ps3s are backwards compatible with ps2 disks.

@Space Cobra This is a BIG investment to play on a ps3. You will need to install from the ps2 discs, and further more, you will need both expansion CD's to access that content, and the three mini expansions can never be played on a ps2 or 3.
Unless you own these discs, or know someone that does, they run about 100 dollars for just the basic set.

Not sure if this is going to be a necessary move for a real PS3 port, but it couldn't be a graphical upgrade this big...the PS2 wouldn't be able to play it.

I just got my 14,584 high density floppies for this upgrade in the mail. I'll...be installing for a while.

Have my babies ... But seriously, any MMO that comes closest to FFXI in it's heyday (which was from RoZ all the way up untill MMM was implemented - in other words the party-oriented period) will have my sub and probably for the remainder of my days. No quest-grind, little to no soloing, forced partying and a million incentives to actually work together, these are the things I crave.
