The only MMOG in the past 5 years (besides Darkfall) that has the balls not be another instanced theme park. Respect.

@Cepaqua You have "respect" yet you don't subscribe to it. That's the problem. Respect doesn't pay the bills.

@(Unverified) Agreed, amazing game - shame about the population. It's not a very solo friendly game and without a population, tough to get things done.

Such a great game with a massive, massive world to spend time in. I love the idea of enormous dungeons that you can go back to time and time again and still find something new.

This game realy needs the F2P treatment, it'll be a hard ask though with EQ2 already in that space.

SOE several months ago stated they were adding additional content to Vanguard. Did they do this?

@HokieKC

I thought developers said they were no longer updating the game? But then a year or so later said they were releasing updates?

That's correct. They are updating the game, but I am not too sure on the details.

What changed is that SWG got shot-down, so some Devs got put on Vanguard. So now, they got extra resources and crew to work on it.

I wish people would stop with the F2P. It doesn't solve anything except getting you in the door free. F2p killed Lotro. F2p decimates crafting. Big seamless worlds need real content, not half-ass cash shop generating grind.

F2P would be the end of Vanguard. A Sony all in one ticket is $19.99 and includes subs to Vanguard, DCUO, EQ1, EQ2, and Pirates of the Burning Sea among others. It's hands down the best deal in MMO-land.

How did LotRO gaining something like 300% in revenue and a huge boost to its population get considered "the death of the game"? By all means, PLEASE explain that one to me.

As far as Vanguard converting to F2P, I think it would be its saving grace. Everyone who plays the game love it except for the terribly low population. F2P would bring people to the game in droves, would increase the game's revenue stream enough to get an actual dev team that would work on more content.

Oh my goodness, that sounds like it would really kill a game. More people, more revenue, sounds terrible doesn't it.

That's great from WB's perspective. From the player's - not so much. Lotro wasn't dying when they converted, it was a straight up cash grab. Now crafting is pointless - people can just buy from the store. Legendary Item quests? pointless.
In their lust to get something for free, people neglect to "follow the money" when they consider F2P. It's all about the profit motivation
Dev's motivation for sub games? Provide fun content to keep you subbed. Dev's motivation for F2P? Keep you just bored enough - keep the content just grindy enough - so that you'll buy xp pots from the item shop to put off your frustration. A player that logs in once in a while, drops $5 and quickly exits is the ideal customer for F2P. The model does not support substance in games at all.
Lotro has been going down hill since the conversion as far as being fun and engaging. There isn't any achievement and no way to realize progress within the game that you can't just buy. The expansions have been junk. The world has gotten fragmented. If you think you'll ever get mounted combat ala Rohan, I have a bridge to sell you.

Lol crafting...

Crafting was simplified, then simplified again... then turned dang near into WoW crafting... but kept the same item levels so it was viable unlike WoW. Now they hamper some low end stuff and make it easier to craft with store item bonuses.

I have friends that didn't even think about playing lotro before that play it now and almost my entire guild from Vanguard went over to Lotro about 3 months after Vanguards release. I went to fanguard when the game was still going to be published by MS.....

I tried Vanguard again after the Sony hack and they let everyone have some free time. It has made some good changes but is way too old to be viable anymore. It won't make Sony money unless it goes F2P, so the only option to keep it going is that.

Vanguard was going to be my home after being disappointed with all the other games and after I was burnt out on EQ1... in the end we got an unfinished game and moved on. I would love to return and the free time I got gave me hope, but I won't pay a monthly for it, sorry.

This game is book-case of wasted potential. This game could have been big if not worst release in MMORPG history and absymal post-release support.

Now after 5 years - let's face it - this game is finished.

Even if it will go F2P (investment would have to be big since scale of this game) it will bring crowds ,but with this game age and number of new games coming in next 2 years it will end up dying anyway.

Besides what makes this game unique , would be reduced alot with cash shop, but that's just my opinion.

Anyway I am not going back to Vanguard - p2p or f2p - does not matter.

Sorry it is just too late and I don't believe SOE enough that they would put huge resources into supporting this game long-term and game of this scale and that was without practically any updates would need really big amount of money and man-hours.

I would think that now is the perfect window for a game like this, seeing as how there's enough people complaining about SWTOR being "more of the same" and GW2 being around the corner -- purely because it's different. That's a virtue in the current climate. A lot of us have played most of the themepark games and found them lacking (I mean, LotRO is my main game right now, and I've been playing whatever I pick up from Gamefly more often than I've been logging in), and decided that the other "different" games weren't for them (couldn't get into Darkfall, found Eve to be boring).

Does this game have a free trial, at least?

I liked this game, but I found the card game diplomacy thing too immersion-breaking for my tastes. I'll take a RNG any day over a card game.

@PhelimReagh You know it is completely optional right? Besides, I figure they should get some props for at least trying to have a diplomacy option/mechanic. More unique then the "you get x points for y faction" quests that a lot of other mmo's do.

I play this game off and on. Best MMO i've played in the last few years since I left FFXI behind.

Old School MMO's ftw.

FYI for you folks - they have thrown more dev team members back at Vanguard over the last couple months and they are updating the game again - and have even announced a rather lengthy long term plan which does include an alternate advancement system among other things. I suggest going to the forums and checking out some of the info there.

Also, lot of hints about going F2P -which would help with the population problem. Needs to do it before GW2 hits though, that's for sure.
