Remember Pirates of the Burning Sea? Yeah, it's still sailing along after its 2010 free-to-play conversion, and the dev team at Flying Lab Software is gearing up to celebrate the game's fourth anniversary in high pirate style.
Brain "Fodderboy" Taney has offered up a lengthy dev blog detailing what's next for the nautical MMO, and he outlines two main goals: immersion and the desire to "layer" the game.
Immersion is fairly self-explanatory (and in case it's not, Taney says that it entails bringing more authentic 18th century elements to the game). Layering requires a bit more verbiage, but it basically boils down to improving "the game experience for all the different kinds of players we have in our community (e.g., casual, hardcore, PvE-only, PvP-only, etc.)," Taney says. There's quite a bit more, of course, but you'll need to head to the official PotBS website to read about it.

Is this any good?

@BigAndShiny Yup this is definitely a good game, I played it for a few months but as someone who prefers PvE and doing merchant activities I found the end-game to be somewhat disappointing though. I think the main problem was that my character was French and at the time there weren't many French players so I had a difficult time selling a lot of my goods. Otherwise the way the economy is setup is great, it really gives you a feeling that you're running your own business, and with purchase orders you get a good notion of supply and demand.
In hindsight I think I'd of enjoyed the game much more if I'd rolled British which had by far the most population at the time, so I'd assume more economic activity. I'd still be playing today but I fell in love with Uncharted Waters Online, which is less user friendly (learning curve similar to EVE I'd say) - but incorporates the entire world and over 100 (I think, or close to) ports so for me trading was more rewarding - even if it was a grind at times. I'd certainly recommend people who like Age of Sail and sandbox games to give both a try!

@Maseno
The ship combat is great, unfortunately nobody I met in open water wanted to fight with their ship. They all setup to rush in close, grapple and board you where they spammed avatar aoe until you were defeated. I could have countered by matching their setup but what I really wanted from a ship combat game was to fight with my ship.....go figure.

I wish someone would play this on your daily streaming...it would be great to see it after all the changes they've made.

If I ever get the itch to be a pirate, I will give this game a shot.
Any plans in the works for Massively to do Quick Look type presentations of MMOs? This is a perfect example of a game I would like to see being played. I think that would be a great feature for Massively to have, live streaming of MMOs being played.

I played this a few times before the untimely death of my previous computed. Haven't downloaded it again (yet) but I thought it was pretty fun. I've been playing STO now and it actually reminds me quite a bit of PoTBS. Obviously in terms of ship combat it is quite similar. As well as wandering from ports or planets/stations in search of quests.

I was there at launch, man it was bad. Avatar battle was a giggle.
Ship battle when it was working right was nice.
I believe it was a video card thing, one of the 2 major brands didn't work very well.
Another game that suffered from release before ready.
