I wish they'd at least let us play the combat music in the jukebox. There's some really awesome tracks in there.

You're probably going to catch some ire for suggesting dubstep, but from my tried-EVE-for-a-bit perspective I think it could work well.

I'm still waiting (probably forever) for a development team to track down Burial and hire him to do the score for a game. He does the most amazing ambient electronic music.

Great music never hurts. I appreciate the music when I play Age of Conan, it helps me cuddle up to the game. Nothing like listening to a great music score while lopping off heads and limbs! Great music would help EVE out I'm sure, out there cruising around deep space...mining asteroids or whatever.

Have to agree Legend of Zelda's music is timeless. I can't wait to listen to it live in the orchestra!

I absolutely LOVE the EvE Online music.. I ripped all the music out of the game and I have it burnt to CD's and on my MP3 player.. I listen to it all the time..
I love it so much... I am not a fan of the game itself (it is ok though) and I don't play it any more, but the soundtrack I listen to all the time.. it's awesome!!

I think sound and musical queues is such an under rated thing that MMO's don't leverage as well as they should.

Nice article.

I feel so strongly about the music in Eve that I almost hate you for suggesting other kinds of music to play in EVE. Y
ou are talking about 2 things here, the actual music itself, and way it is delivered to the player. EVEs music is amazing. ALL other mmo's and computer games for that matter get the music switched off for me because i just care for it, Eves setting really does cater to the music that i do enjoy. Even swtor got turned off after a week. But as you put it above the music has been in the game a very very long time and it needs some new stuff added and the old stuff some sprucing up - by the original artist. When you talk about music delivery and layers, these are great ideas and i have seen them used in a few music games already. Id like to see this happen, back in the old days all the computer games used to contain the midi or mod file to perform the song rather then it be a recording which is all thats used today. i can think of many ways to pull this off and still have great sounding music and its something that would be really cool to see done.
Still i am totally against changing the type of music that is in EvE.

And for those looking for more of the same to change it up with, anything from Ultimae Rec. and Altar Rec. will have your ambience covered. And for your combat you can have some Suntrip rec. but its not all gonna work.
Good article, exactly what was required to make me post something.

I agree. The soundtrack is quite stunning, but it's time for a bit of new life. I rarely have my in-game jukebox on anymore. That said, once in a while I will turn it on, and still be impressed.

While I like the idea of techno or dubstep, I'm a huge fan of orchestral music. Imagine some Eve music being done by Jeremy Soule. Ah, one can dream.

"Since then, however, a new genre of music in the form of dubstep has shown itself to be perfectly suited to space combat."

Only for some. To others dubstep is the sonic equivalent of someone using a cheese grater to shred their ears into bloody tatters.

You probably don't want to choose a genre that has such a love-it-or-loathe-it reaction.

You know this makes me very nervous...

...one of the most wonderfully music themed MMO's next to EVE in IMO was City of Heroes. With an amazing assortment of techno, breaks and ambient along with the occasional Justice League like themes made it's music scape very refreshing and out of the ordinary. But over the years, with each introduction of a new facets such as City of Villains, Going Rogue and Freedom has introduced more bombastic "hero music" that that has sent me running faster and screaming louder to shut down the music volume nob in each succession. The current Freedom theme has even managed to beat the Wagner overture of hideousness that's WoW's Cataclysm theme....and I still can't fathom anything on Elune's green earth beating that. This is all due to "updating" their music...

...so here's a que to EVE dev's in introducing new pieces. Stay away from violins. Stay away from trumpets. Don't buy into the industry standard of theme music having to "move foward" means to go way the hell backwards. I haven't heard anything from Autechre lately...perhaps they need work, so use them! And what Mr. Drain said about dubstep. Just saying.

I only play for 4 months and at that stage I still have the jukebox on all the time
having said that, in other games that period is a week or so before I switch it off
and than you always have EVE Radio as well:)

For me the current soundtrack in eve have allways made me felt stressed, so i do hope they change it so i can listen to music while playing again soon :)

Regarding good music in mmo's i gotta mention SWTOR, not because that its ''nostalgic'' or because they ''give us the good old songs'' but because they are EXTREMELY good at timing the right songs for the right times,

Honestly, if CCP look at their development schedule, and can either add new ships or add new music... I'll go with the new ships please :)

The music that exists fit the universe very well, and is good for new players, but lets face it, after a while we turn it off. So, the existing music does it's job nicely, and there are always ways to listen to new similar music by listening to streaming music from Bluemars for example.

IMHO there is NOTHING wrong with EVE's music. They could add some new tracks - sure. But take out the old? NO. Dubstep? DOUBLE NO.

@Moonaura: CCP doesn't do everything themselves. They do outsource things, music for instance is composed by Jon Hallur who as far as I know isn't employed by CCP otherwise. They also hired real designers for the Incarna clothes, then apparently (looking at the few concepts availabel) said "fuck this" and made space-sweaters.

Music is incredibly subjective. We all have our favorites and our own ideas of what game music should be like. One man's trash is another man's treasure, so to speak. Some people like to turn it off. Additionally, we all have our memories of in-game music that made a certain title that much more memorable.

Eve's music certainly fits in that category. I haven't played Eve for about a year, but I still fire up the soundtrack occasionally. As I recall, Eve's jukebox also allows you to put in your own playlists. I tried this with varying degrees of success and failure; Some tracks just wouldn't play. Other times, over Teamspeak, you could clearly hear other players' custom soundtracks playing just about anything, although, I noted a lot of people seem to like their Eve with techno, trance or some variation of that. If you've ever watched any fan-made Eve videos, there is a preponderance of techno music thundering away in time to pitched battles.

I don't know that changing the music is a great idea. Would some additional music be welcome? Absolutely. If Jon Hallur were asked to compose some new music for the game, in addition to what's already there, I'd welcome it and I think, so would most of the players. But does it need to be replaced? Let's not forget part of what makes the game memorable in the first place.

I like most of Eve's music - 'seek and you shall find'. Oh yes.

Other than that: Roc Wieler has made some interesting Eve related music, for instance YC113. Worth a listen to, if you're into the orchestral / movie music style.
