This is good news, Forgotten Realms should have been used as the setting from the start in my opinion. I guess a 'magic door' between the two settings can fix that issue, being D&D after all.

@Vegetta

All D&D should be Planescape. Forever.

@JuliusSeizure

yes,

the devs should go play torment and then make an MMO of that. That game rocked.

A Shapeshifting class AND Forgotten Realms setting?

You have my attention.

I wonder if the FR setting will only be available to higher level characters or if we will be able to roll new characters in FR? Either way, I'll be following this news pretty closely. (Yay Shapeshifting class!)

@Wispur

The low level areas are in desperate need of a revamp so I hope it allows for new characters, but I doubt it.

@Wispur I was thinking the same myself. I enjoy DDO in a casual manner, only playing bits here and there.

I thought Cryptic had the license for the Forgotten Realms property?

@Yellowdancer

I suspect it's a license specifically for their mmorpg concept, rather than a license to exclusively produce FR material. WOTC like to retain some flexibility with their licensees.

@pcgneurotic Cryptic is making the next Neverwinter a F2P MMO. Maybe Cryptic just has the rights to Neverwinter, and not the overall Forgotten Realms? I'm not sure now.

@Yellowdancer It's Atari who has the license for Forgotten Realms games, which is Turbine's publisher of late.

@Yellowdancer

Cryptic has the rights only for Neverwinter which they kept after the Atari sold them. Look at the small print on .playneverwinter site you see it never mention Forgotten Realms only Neverwinter.

@Yellowdancer It looks like Atari handed the crown over to Turbine.

@Saerain I'm pretty sure Hasbro has pulled back Atari's exclusive rights to D&D video games and is now free to license the property more openly.

This probably helps explain why it took Turbine as long it as it did to break out of Eberron.

Wow...that is actually big news, but a bit "WTF" from an Eberron lore perspective. Still, exciting for anyone hoping to eventually see a proper Neverwinter MMO -- this might be as close as they get. ;)

So wait this new expansion is free for everyone? Thats a great move on their part, if true. Might have to revisit DDO. Wonder if this content will be for high level characters or if you can start a fresh level 1 character and access it?
