Another day, another PlanetSide 2 vehicle reveal. The latest update from Sony Online Entertainment features the venerable Galaxy, and if that doesn't quicken your pulse a little bit, you must've missed the original PlanetSide.
The Galaxy is a heavily armored troop transport designed to "hot drop" 12 soldiers into the heart of enemy territory. What's a hot drop? It's basically the game's sci-fi twist on the traditional parachute, and SOE says that it "automatically encapsulates any soldier or MAX unit that bails out with a protective barrier that slows their fall."
Galaxies are also sturdy enough to serve as mobile infantry bases after landing, and the ships feature respawn tubes, equipment terminals, and four weapon systems that may be operated on the ground.

It looks suspiciously like a Firefly-class transport.

And the problem with that is ?

The most non-aerodynamic vehicle I've seen in any game, but I love it so much! I wonder if those spawn tubes will work in the air? It would be cool to have a endless stream of hot drops from a galaxy circling over a base.

@laelgon
it would be very cool indeed, but also kind of unbalanced.
If you read the linked reveal, it clearly states that the respawn tubes and equipment terminals are only usable when the Galaxy is on the ground and "deployed." :/
Still very cool though; some of my favorite memories from Planetside revolve around Galaxies... :)

If the game functions much like the original though, this flying respawn point will be a godsend to behind the lines teams like mine used to focus on.
Drop the squad off over a target techplant, fly the Galaxy somewhere nearby but out of sight and deploy it to serve as a respawn point. When the enemy eventually manages to kick the squad out of their base, they can all respawn at the Galaxy, mount up and fly to the next target. No more tedious returns to Sanctuary.

I loved being a Galaxy pilot in the first game. I had some of my most memorable moments playing planetside.
Nothing like taking a fully loaded galaxy into a hot zone at steep trajectory from a high altitude to pull back on the stick at the last 50 meters and having all your troops drop in on the actions then hit the afterburners to make a get away.
Man that was awesome!

Sure thing.
Hopefully SOE will release a lot more info soonish, can't wait for this game.
