How successful is RIFT? That's hard to say without knowing how much it cost, but it's safe to assume that Trion executives are smiling after the game generated $100 million in revenue in only 10 months.
CEO Lars Buttler told Reuters that the company is still considering an initial public stock offering, and it has also secured an additional $85 million in funding as it readies RIFT for the South Korean and Chinese gaming markets later this year. Trion is also developing an MMO shooter called Defiance and an MMORTS known as End of Nations.

The game was in fantastic shape at launch and I've been interested in checking it out again. I only left because I was burnt out on fantasy MMOs.
I'm pretty indifferent about End of Nations but I can't wait to see what Trion does with Defiance. I have a lot of faith in them after seeing how well Rift turned out.

@vaporise The back stories on the characters and places are actually really well written, you just have to find them. I probably have about 50 books in my main's collection inventory now.
Many quest areas have books if various rarity lying around. They aren't used for anything other than story fluff and when picked up and collected, file themselves away into a special inventory that doesn't take up bag space.
Some times I'll just stand at a quest hub, still as a statue reading through my book collection.

@Cyroselle
so the complete story of telara can be found in-game but are in items you collect through adventuring? that sounds fantastic. kinda reminds me of diablo 1 actually with thos pedestals with books in it describing the events in the distant past. interesting.... i like it.

I'm glad to hear this. Rift is a well-made game that I enjoyed playing for a bit. It just didn't grab me the way SWTOR has -- different strokes for different folks, as they say.
What's most encouraging to me, however, is to see that non-WoW subscription-based games are viable. That's really the type of game I prefer. I want to pay ONCE and then have access to the whole game, not be "nickle-and-dimed to death" by MTs at every turn.
Gratz to Trion!

I love that the latest interview with one of WOW's lead devs asked him about Rifts stellar content updates and he said "it was something they are looking into"....
Way to go Rift

not surprising even tho they have some things i hate in mmos i have to give them due props for having put out content updates really quickly proving to every player that when companies like bioware, blizzard, ncsoft, and cryptic have huge wait times between patches and are getting monthly fees on top of the box price that they are just wasting the player's time because it is possible to put out content patches very fast with half the staff and a quarter of the money most of these companies put into their games. It's nice to see. The reason i'm not playing? I don't like strict themeparks missing things like multiple beginner areas, nonlinear questlines, no exploration, gear treadmill etc etc. I like the game it was great in beta it's just not for me.

@(Unverified) I won't try to convince you to play, as you stated it's not the type of game for you.
Just wanted to make a respectful correction. Most of the quest lines are nonlinear. There's very few chain or bread crumb quests actually, and IIRC that was a major complaint some folks had made on release.
Myself I'm quite thrilled when I run across quests by pure accident and it happens all the time in this game. And there's plenty of exploration to be had, it's not a series of box canyons like Aion or SWTOR... It's just that the world isn't actually very big right now. There is room for growth however.
But yes, more beginner areas, while not really fitting w/ the story line would be excellent, and there is indeed a gear grind after 50. At least the wardrobe ensures that we won't be running around in clown costumes like WoW during the TBC years.

It's very much a heartening trend. I'm hoping it's a sign that people are realizing that disliking a game but wishing it well aren't mutually exclusive. Disliking a game doesn't have to mean the game is terrible and the developer sucks and that you have to construe news to make it seem like it's dying. Maybe there's a middle ground: if you don't like a game, just take it as it not being your cup of tea and don't demonize the game, the developers, or its fanbase.
It seems as if most people posting on Rift articles get that already though, which is great.

i'm happy it worked out for Trion.. i really enjoyed my tie leveling more so than i thought i would and as an mmo company i found their service superb.
if only they had improved pvp more i would still be there and i am sure many others would have been too.

I must admit that playing swtor and reading up on rift's successes makes me want to give it another shot

Congrats to Trion for being successful with RIFT. While it is not really my kind of game, I admit to having enjoyed myself on their free trial. I encourage anyone looking for a modern, progression-driven fantasy mmo to give the free trial a spin. Yeah its not particularly innovative, but the little tweaks and details they did on the standard formula are notable enough to set it apart from the pack.

that is why they merge servers , gl going to f2p soon

@beqerel
Every game is going to merge servers. most games follow the wow design. Which is basically a single player game with thousands of people playing it.
In the end they basically run out of content. Warzones, raids, and what not make for crappy long run end game.
