So, what caused it to fail in the east? How can it be any worse than Aion or Lineage?

SWTOR and RIFT lost to WoW. Are they failures?
Tera had an open beta in korea that attracted more concurrent users than AION ever had - they increased there server amount. Eventually people had to pay, other people decided the game wasn't for them - servers were merged.

Tera KR has 13 servers.
Tera JP has all of 3 servers.
It's not a time-to-declare-bankruptcy failure. But it certainly is a huge disappointment. And trying to suggest it performed in any way better than Aion is ridiculous.

Is that a rhetorical question? Or are you actually serious?
And FYI, yes, those are rhetorical questions.

@Tizmah I don't think it failed, and the Asian MMO Market is FULL of options, I'm pretty sure everyone but the top dogs would struggle a bit.

For comparison, Aion has 42 servers in Korea last I checked (which was awhile ago).
In other words, Tera has less than a third as many servers. Whether or not this constitutes a flop depends on how you define it.

When you don't make enough profit to beat a 10-year government bond (which essentially has no risk) by a meaningful margin, it's a huge disappointment.

And some quick math.
Rift just announced they've earned 100m usd in revenue. Rift has 34 servers NA EU combined.
Tera has 16 servers KR JP combined. 16/34 * 100m ~ 47m. Assuming they make about 66% profit, pretty generous, that's about 31m usd.
According to BHS it cost them more than 35m usd to make Tera. They haven't even earned back their investment yet.
Of course the numbers can be very off. But Tera's obviously not raking in the money for BHS.

That... matters... how...?
You asked why 13 servers = failure.
I answered you 13 servers = failure because it does not make enough money to justify the monetary and time investment.
