It's been a rough couple of years for Warhammer MMORPG fans, and if the rumors are true, it's about to get a bit bleaker.
Kotaku reports on a tweet by games industry insider Kevin Dent that indicates that THQ has "canceled its entire 2014 slate of releases to position the company for sale." This would include Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online, which Dent referred to as "the Games Workshop MMO" on his Twitter page.
We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
[Update: THQ's Australian PR department has issued a statement asserting that the company has not in fact canceled its 2014 lineup and "has not made any decisions" regarding WAR40K.]

Austerity is going to see off numerous company's, not necessarily just those in the gaming industry. Bye bye W40K. :'(
Condolences.

Oh man real bummer for everyone involved. All the guys and gals who been working on that game. That has to be tough. Hopefully whoever picks up the company will continue with War40K. They seemed like a pretty talented bunch over at THQ. I can only hope someone comes along with deep pockets who can make lemonade out of this bad news.

@Poordevil I'm not sure if that's entirely possible. "Dent went on to say that the publisher had also canceled all projects due for release in 2014 and was in the process of returning intellectual property to their licensors."
The way I read that is there is a possibility the WAR IP may not get sold along with the company.

Wow. This caught me offguard.
I didn't like some of the development decisions on this game but THQ is a great studio and they've done great Warhammer games.

Sad about the 40K MMO, but THQ is a great studio overall and has really made some great games.

At least we will have Wrath of Heroes, not all is lost.
I'm sorry, that was cruel. Hopefully this rumor is false.

So is it EA or Activision that end up buying THQ. Either way doesn't look good when gamers have less companies to pick from.

THQ aside (I do like some of they games they published) I'm almost thankful for the MMO to be canceled.
It was a two-faction game in a world of constant warring between multiple factions. This fact alone would have doomed any open-world PVP possibilities the game could have.
That set up goes against not only the fluff, but also good game design.

Bit unnecessary and immature don't you think? Threatening a stranger with death over the internet for a personal opinion.
A lot of folks including myself were disappointed that they took the 40K setting and appeared to want to water it down to Warcraft standard Alliance Versus Horde two faction gameplay. There didn't seem to be a lot of ambition beyond the "make a game that plays like WoW and slap an IP on it" the appears to typify AAA MMO development in the west nowadays.
Perhaps that's inevitable that when you combine a big licence with MMO development; theres just no room for Innovation. The Old Republic would seem to bear that out. But that doesn't make it any less disappointing whenever it happens.
That said, I'll be personally sad if THQ goes under. Their games have kept me entertained plenty over the years.

I thought 40k was going to be a 2013 launch. Seems stupid for them to cancel such a strong IP that has had so much put into it already. Ill believe it when its more than just a rumor and a tweet.
