Why delay it? lost of guilds move to new games and want to be up and running from start.

personal opinion: something that requires a lot of work. But for practicality reasons, I think you should be able to do it within a couple of days of playing the game. Definitely not within the first 10 minutes though.

It's always good to get that extra bag space to share across my alts as soon as possible.

I've seen this in one or two games, but I can't remember which ones, nor many details about it, but it's something I really liked.

They had two organizations you could be a member of simultaneously. One was basically a guild, but it was a limited structure group that was little more than a chat channel and a tag on your character. It was more for social interaction with friends, and had no serious impact on anything in the game.

Then there was a heavily structured organization that tied in to the games political/pvp/raid system. This is what gave you oranizational perks in the game, your actions contributed to an experience or influence system for this organization, etc.

I always like that system, because it allowed you to stay with a group of friends while simultaneously enjoying what content you wanted in the end game. In a setup like this, the basic 'guild' would be createable immediately, whereas the other organization would have certain faction/level requirements to create.

@Kamokazi

I like this idea. It's almost like setting up various chat groups or custom channels. MMO's should take a cue from social networking site on how to... well, network social groups in game. GW2 is doing that multi-guild thing, which is a step in the right direction, but I think a not-quite-a-guild chat grouping system would be great.

@Kamokazi Exactly, and thats exactly what I try to explain in the blog post I link in my comment below. I'm glad you see the benefit of a more "social" approach to guilds.

@hereafter

The chat thing is possible in plenty of MMOs; just create a custom chat channel. Most games even seem to make the channel selection persistent.

The hard part is getting players to use it, though. They don't see it as any kind of substitute to guilds, even though it does mostly the same as the guild chat, which is all some guilds actually use.

It is true that often being in a guild isolates you from the rest of the community in a way, but I think that is partly the fault of the guild system itself. I mean, just look at games which also incorporate an "alliance" system, which instantly increase your friend pool, while still allowing you to have your little niche of friends.

Anyway, here are my full thoughts about the problems with current guild systems, and how they should be improved to make gaming a more social experience (I think it was publised in a news article on this site a few months back):

Im in a guild whether the game recognizes it or not. If they dont let us organize in game, we do it on teamspeak or forums instead.

For me, as early as possible, and preferably allow players to be part of multiple guilds and for guilds to span multiple servers (like GW2 is going to do).

as soon as possible is the best.
Warhammer Online had(still has) nice feature... if u reached to chapter 3 in starting area...u automatically joined the guild. which was just newbie guild where u could chat with all the newbies and ask some questions, do something togheter etc.
and after lvl10 u could great ur own guild.

thats pretty good way i think.

Why would anyone want a game developer telling players when and with whom they can form a gaming group. Guilds exist as an entity with a website and voice chat server outside of the game. They do not need to be game specific and should not be at the mercy of game developer whim.

It depends on the role and function for guilds. If they are basically like WoW guilds which are glorified chat rooms and a shared bank, then there is no reason not to make forming one easy.

I think you should have to work for guild creation. it shouldn't just be a automatic. This does not have to slow guild creation a lot but it should weed out the unserious or place holder guild creator some.

@Doran7 for that we have guild leveling in many mmorpgs.
im still in opinion that guild creation should be quite easy and from the start of the game. so u can play with ur friends nicely.

a guild should be allowed before the game itself gets concieved, so start making your guilds for guild wars 3 and 4 and 5, and for swtor 2 and for that doesn't exist yet! a guild is about people not about a game :D play with your friends guys!
