On Tuesday, January 17th, Star Trek Online will be officially free-to-play!
In celebration of the launch, Massively will be joining Cryptic Studios in welcoming all new and veteran captains. The team is hosting several fun events ranging from costume and trivia events to livestreamed character creation tutorials and dance parties!
Please join me, Massively's humble STO columnist, as I pair up with STO's Community Manager Brandon Felczer to stream our way through all the fun. You could win up to 5000 STO Promotional Points! All livestreamed events can be viewed during and after the event on Massively's Twitch channel, and all other communications can be monitored on the "F2PLaunchParty" chat channel in-game. The fun begins at 1:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, so check out the official schedule of events after the break.

@(Unverified) BS, why would they let you in early? you didn't pay a dime otherwise you would have been able to.

@(Unverified) Maybe you just didn't stack up to their standards. i was a beta tester from day one , i was a subscriber til I got bored with it, plus i got into F2P the first day early invites went out. maybe you have a bad rep with cryptic or something.

Glad to see there are Events like this and others showing up all the time. I'm super excited about this! Not sure if any other MMO has done anything similar but it does show a great community! Definitely, will try to show up but most of that time is me being at work >.< Hope it goes well guys!

Most of the festivities are taking place post-5pm! I love you guys, but I won't be able to take a half-day to come play. :( I will make everything 6pm onwards, though...

Wow, very nice.
I am feeling a bit heady with excitement. I guess I'd better lie down in my Starship until this event gets rolling!

Are "promo points" the same as cryptic points? Like, can we use them to buy cash shop items?

Very cool. Looking forward to this. I played a while back and "beat" the game. I heard they added a lot more things and fleshed out the Klingon faction.
I am downloading the new client right now.

I'm a bit confused. Are these giveaways (other than the obvious costume & dance/emote contest) for those watching the live streams?

So "nice" that all these events are suited for NE and none for EU players... :/

Bit disappointed that as a brit I'll be asleep through most of this, unless I drink 20 cups of coffee.

Shit half of this goes down when I'm at work, and I'll probably spend the rest of the time actually downloading/installing the game.
Oh well, have fun guys.

will i dont like what i read, i thought they was goin to make the game free to play for everyone, but no their going to select players according to total time played etc and or whatever,
i been playing for a couple months. now i know i won't get selected, i mean i paid for the game from the shops, and i didnt know i had to pay to pay online, if knew that then i wouldnt of brothered buying it...
why should we the players pay each month to play the game online, what is the point.
so i am sorry everyone i aint gonna brother, unless they make it F2P for everyone. then i wont be playing. so i have uninstalled it for now...
