I was gonna disagree and comment how board games being just as good as video games....but then I actually read the article. XD

Thing is, I have a friend who is part of a board game club, and he brings several when we get together. Lets just say the games he brings are NOT Monopoly and Sorry!.

I recommend playing Arkham Horror, or Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, though I'm not sure how family friendly they would be.

While I see that Karen is drawing a distinction between chance-based board games and the typical mmo, I have to disagree somewhat. I feel many board games are actually less chance-based than the typical mmo. Typical mmos have many chance-based elements (% drop, % to hit, % evade/block, rolling for loot, item quality gambling, mystery boxes), and are arguably more chance-based than many board games. There are many, many dice rolls that happen in the background.

Classics like chess, checkers, go, stratego, reversi, connect four, diplomacy, mastermind have zero chance at all. Other classics such as scattergories, pictionary, trivial pursuit, and scrabble are significantly less chance-dependent than a typical mmo. Then of course there are the many "Eurogames" which generally emphasize strategy and critical thinking over chance.

Just setting the record straight about chance in board games vs mmos.

If you're going to introduce your children to boardgames then don't use those poorly designed classics. YOUR nostalgia won't make your kids like them. There are hundreds of newer designs that are better in every way. Look them up on Board Game Geek. There are dozens of recommendation threads for all sorts of age ranges and themes.
