The massive increase in development cost (MMO or otherwise) has almost everything to do with graphics. While a company might have a handful of artists work on a project back in the 16-bit days, now you need dozens and dozens of artists and animators to create believable, 3D worlds. That's why indie developers and smaller, downloadable titles have been doing more innovative, forward things than big companies.

@Wisdomandlore

no, the fact that wallstreet has found out about videogames is why costs have ballooned while quality sinks.

it's all about profit forecasting (see TOR as a prime example): one of the best ways to get investment funding for a video game, any project really, is to treat it like it doesn't NEED to have funding. so the fact is that the more money you pump into something, the more potential inverters will think it's a quality product and sign up so as to get in on the action when it launches and starts bringing in stupid amounts of money.

that's why costs have gone up, the reason why quality has gone down is because once you do get those investors (who don't know a damned thing about what makes for good INTERACTIVE entertainment) to give you their money, they want to see results but it's hard to express quality game mechanics in terms that they will understand (AKA three pictures and a line or two of text).

most game makers now a days don't make shit off of actual unit sales, that's all for the investors, it's investment money that keeps them afloat so it's investors that they are developing for and who cares if the product tanks 'cause you can just blame things on someone else and fire up a new start up with the investment money you pocketed and a hand full of assurances that it was some external element that caused things to go to hell.

So don't worry, it will work out this time .... with your sizable investment!

Right now the big names in the gameing industry aren't interested in making good games, just good profit. Now that games can be patched after release they are slowly degrading in quality.

TOR is a prime example for what is happening right now, while they don't release any information, and a good example of a game releasing early. TOR reached the magic point, where the projected income from box sales was equal to the cost of development, and since they aren't willing to bet on them selves creating an amazing game they release and unfinished product and sell on all they hype they generated and where successful in distracting most players from the remaining problems in the game.

This all brings the question to light: Why should we have faith in developers that don't have faith in their own ability?

If they aren't willing to push past the development/sales point why should we trust them to continue to improve the game? So far no one has released a truly good game.

It's also very frustrating when you start following a game like TOR, and they start talking about things like sandboxes and their good points early in development, and then they just follow the same idea other games are using and release another story grind for the eager masses of players.

Lets hope Goblinworks has the rite idea, right now they are the only developer with any promise. BioWare had the ability and the money but they didn't bet on them selves and just made a shiny new hand-holder.
