Hearing a lot of news from PS2 lately, is it getting close?

Nice article.

@Coolit

They've opened up beta signups, so I'm hoping that it isn't too far away.

Ah PlanetSide I remember focusing purely on the Galaxy for the sole reason of saying "In the pipe five by five" each time I dropped off troops and about 85% of the time it was true. The other 15% would be followed by "where's the damn beacon!?" ;-P

Planetside I was great, but it wouldn't hurt PS2 to have a central social hub for each faction for a little downtime between battles, someplace to chat, recruit, maybe play some mini-games, and consume virtual intoxicants. It's a little challenging to interface with people in any meaningful way when you're busy unloading hot death at the enemy.

@Yukon Sam Agreed! A social hub is definitely something I want to see.

@Yukon Sam They called it the sanctuary, it had a shooting range, an area to test every vehicle and aircraft, and you couldn't use guns anywhere but the shooting range (where it was impossible to hurt friendlies).

I don't think anyone has spoken about crafting. They have always made the best crafting system(Not counting EQ1).

And I'm sure they said a post launch feature would be player made bases.

I'm getting a vibe of a FPS version of SWG without glowsticks.

As I've seen it, the real problem with Planetside wasn't necessarily the repetitiveness of the content, it was the complete *lack* of new content. In the entire time I played we only got Core Combat which brought those god -awful caves to fight in, and eventually the Battle Islands. It wasn't uncommon to go six months in that game and your one and only update would be a new APC.

It was a great game, but without solid content updates, inevitably it was going to get boring. Hopefully Sony intends to be properly committed to the sequel, but it's been a long time since I personally thought favorably of them as a company.

Pitfalls: F2P with an item store. Game over.

Literally it went from them initially teasing that they were going to make a PS2 and me thinking "I don't buy MMOs on launch anymore, but I would do it for that one. Can't wait", to them saying it would be microtransactions and me thinking "Alright, what else is coming out?"

Won't touch that game with a 23 1/2 foot pole.

I completely understand what your talking about. I loved PS and it will always hold a special place in my heart. There is nothing like dropping out of a plane a thousand feet above an enemy base and surprising your enemy .

I did eventually leave the game for a lot of the same reasons. Taking over the same base over and over for no real apparent reason gets tedious. The terrain was a real eye sore imo. Nothing but the same colored snow/grass/rocks/trees throughout the whole universe.

I haven't really been following the game since it still seems like it's a long way off. The way you explain the new class system makes me think they are going for a more cookie-cutter class system. It all depends on how they do it but it might turn out to be a nice change as waiting 24 hours to respec in PS was always a pain.

@ jeff- when AoC went F2P I started getting back into FPS which is where I started. I didn't play Planetside but after watching the videos on the PS2 gameplay, I really want to engage in this game. What I see here in the videos are a mixture of game play that I really enjoy. Tanks, ground troops, and flight vehicles. And the eventuality of a space game really sucks me in. Microtransaction stores don't which I dont debate on because I feel in games that allow crafting, that it pulls away from player crafted markets.

It's funny how you mention Dust 514. If it came to the PC I would be into that as well. I just cant get used to the controllers for a FPS on the PS3. They are too slow which I don't debate on.

Oh ya, happy new year Jeff!

Am I the only one who finds it strange that Dust isn't a pc game?

No and if Dust514 is PS3 only the Planetside 2 has nothing to worry about.

I gripe about how stupid a business decision CCP is making every chance I get. They essentially went from a potentially amazing platform to something that I can't see having more than half of chance of being mediocre at best.

As for PS2, well, I got a little time with the Tribes Ascend beta, and I just hope it isn't like that. Big huge battles are awesome, but I don't like shooting at specs a mile off in the distance only to get gibbed before even really seeing anyone. I just hope they figure out a way to make eground fighting close, gritty, and intense.

I do wish DUST was coming to the PC, and tbh I think it will eventually. Particularly if CCP really wants to make good on all of the interplay between DUST and EVE, they almost have to eventually bring it to the primary platform.

Silly comment system, ugh.

Anyway, yeah, I'm hopeful that DUST will eventually come to the PC. You'd think it would be necessary going forward based on the interplay between DUST and EVE.

And happy new year to you sir.
