I never got into stories in MMOs until SW/TOR. I really hate reading walls of text for story.

Star Wars is the first MMO that I have actually really enjoyed leveling in. In other games, you grab quests look at map and head there. There really was little story telling involved in actual play.

RP without player generated story is basically just acting out a book or movie. Sure it may be mildly amusing, but it lacks the creativity of developing your own character's story, as well as the intrigue of seeing how other player's characters behave in relation to you own.

Personally, I just can't get into a game that forces my characters down a rigid path. It stifles creativity in RP, and leaves me feeling detached from the game world and my character.

Yes a game like SWTOR offers some dialogue options, but having played several of Bioware's previous games, I know that such NPC dialogue options are limited, and can leave the player having to choose the least worse of options that fit their character.

That is why I personally prefer an MMO with as little pre-scripted story content as possible. Yes there should still be story, it's required to give players a sense of context to the game world and give meaning to why they and their characters are doing things in the world. But I think that with regards to facilitating RP, developer created story should be as hands off towards players as possible, and mostly be executed as meta-story presented through world events.

For games that you play, for players like you.

On the other hand, some people prefer the fodder of a rich, pregenerated, active storyline because they can mess with it, juxtapose or contrast with it.

My personal opinion is that people who like to roleplay but find their immersion breaking because the game is a certain way tend to be acting out their pre-set fantasies, rather than truly roleplaying.

I empathise with your point, but cool off the passive-aggressive attacks. Did you learn nothing from the article? Ceridith's view isn't wrong or self-aggrandising, it's just the other side. A preference for creative space against your preference for structure.

I like the middle ground. Give pre-scripted story for those who need it and an entertaining way to learn about the lore for those who don't. Then give tools for those want to tell their own stories and for those who don't to just goof around. Everybody wins!
