Hey friends can enter housing in FFXI now. You can set it up to invite them in.

Errr..."alternatives to combat" should really include EVE. Sure, combat is a reality there, but a huge percentage of players -- miners, traders, explorers, manufacturers, etc. -- go for long stretches without firing a weapon. These aren't "side games" or "mini-games," either: they're vital parts of the economy.

@ScottishViking
How much of that is un- or rarely-attended botting, however?

@StClair

There are some macro-miners, but most of the other activities I listed cannot truly be done by bots. Also, if you're dumb (or sad) enough to macro-mine, then you deserve every ganked ship you undock.

@ScottishViking You haven't seen arbitrage bots or dualboxed transports, scanning alts, and multiboxed miners. Most manufacturing takes all of fifteen minutes to set things up, then you leave it run till the timer is up. Make no mistake, 95% of what is done in EVE is blowing stuff up in terms of time spent.

@Dblade

Then I must not be doing it right, because that's probably how I spend about 10% of my time in game.

@Dblade

Or replacing stuff that got blown up.

Thats the thing about manufacturers and miners and haulers etc. in EVE.

They try to act like their innocent, but they make their living by things that are directly used to blow other people up. They are shady arms dealers in a perpetual war.

Sometimes I wonder how interesting it would be, if you could track where things come from down to the mineral in this game. Would someone who got suicide ganked feel any different if it was exposed the ammo or minerals used to craft the ship that did the killing blow actually passed through their own isk making operations? Could they claim to be innocent any longer?

@StClair combat can easily be botted in any game these days anyway, it doesn't really apply to this discussion.

I confirm that you can invite friends to visit your Mog House in FF XI and it has been in FF XI for a long time now.

As much as I love SWTOR, I am truly disappointed by the lack of customization: only near-human races, a handful of faces to choose from, 4 body types, and maybe 3 or 4 hair styles that don't look ridiculous. Also, most of the gear looks terrible, and there's no appearance tab or even armor dyes. Maybe I'll give STO a try; I love sci-fi, and the Foundry could be a lot of fun if it's implemented well.

@Spacegrass

I agree, particularly on the cosmetic front. I've been spoiled by all the innovations and changes in LOTRO's clothing slot system. I hope TOR implements some of these in the near future, because most of the models are strikingly dull.

The last two categories should include Darkfall. You can level up any of your stats in Darkfall by crafting. And in Darkfall the entire economy is player run. You can't find better gear than Dragon which you have to craft. The Devil is the only drop of Dragon.. and quite recently goblins lol. But the Devil has a 12 hour respawn timer.

I ponied up for a hideout during a sale (retro moonbase! Yeah, baby!) and the customizations were a little underwhelming. Sure the giant laser of doom is nice, but why can't it by giant laser AND the nuclear missile silos?

Nice set of lists!

A Tale In The Desert should fit into some of these categories. http://www.atitd.com/

While it is not quite as sandbox:y as originally indicated and is not doing that well at the moment, Earthrise could probably also be included in some parts (skill-based, crafting and guild bases I believe). (http://www.play-earthrise.com/)

Should add Anarchy Online to the "Housing" list (you can own an apartment, and there is a player city system), and APB to the "Customization" list (it speaks for itself).

Second life, with all it allows you to do, could top every list were it not for "those" parts of its world.

Great lists!

One major element that I feel shouldn't be left out is player politics, the ability of player groups to claim and rule over different parts of the map.

This is the single most important feature that has drawn me to games such as EVE, DarkFall, Mortal, Fallen Earth and the upcoming ArcheAge (even TERA).

The DCUO clothing options description is inaccurate. Your costume is set to whatever you determine based on the styles you've collected from every single costume piece you've ever worn. You can optionally allow new pieces to automatically override your current choice, but that's terrible and no one does that.
