Without a doubt my tamer in UO was the best pet class I have played. In UO pets actually got better with use.

WoW Warlock. I LOVE DoT classes, and so far, besides MAYBE the Necro / Warlock combo in RIFT, no game has properly done DoT classes justice.

The Imp was just the coolest thing too. Only thing I always wished for was a Pet Customization, where you could add stuff to your pets, always wanted a Voidwalker like the ones in Outland, with the lamps hanging from his back.

Gonna have to jump on the Mastermind bandwagon, if only 'cause it's the only pet class that ever really held my attention. Ninja death swarm FTW.

My Orc MM Hunter in WoW is full of meaness and awsome sauces. (Yes I do play other speices other than Gnomes.)

Followed very closely by my Gnome Demo Warlock. Something with small green sprouts for hair that weilds a badass Felguard is also full of awsome sauce.

Then followed closely by my machiavellian Robotics Mastermind schoolgirl Villian in CoH...who wants take over the world. Which of coarse is just awsome sauce.

My point with all the awsome sauce? Not much really. Just wanted to list my favorite pet toons as a thought exercise...since the subject is about pet classes...

...but I will say one thing though...pet classes are awsome sauce at solo'ing. A little less so with group dynamics. /shrug

None, They all leave something to desire.
If I had to pick it'd be Wow's hunter class because I like the (limited) interaction between hunter and pet.
But really if you get to know me you know I'd gladly spend the entire game building a bioware-type relationship with a giant bat, and a robot spider if I could.

BeastMaster from FFXI might be my favourite pick.

Pre-NGE Creature Handler is also a favourite.

Of games I play or played recently City of Heroes Mastermind is an obvious choice, as well as Necromancer and Ritualist from Guild Wars.

The best pet class in any MMO hands down is City of Heroes Freedom's Mastermind. Six or more pets out at once, they can take damage for you, you get everything from Ninjas to Robots to Demons, you can make them emote and talk. Sure there are AI issues, just like with every other pet class in every other MMO. But Masterminds are the best of the bunch...easily so!

@Daemodand You make that sound pretty fun, I'll have to give that a shot, it's been a long time since I've played the City Of franchise.

Everquest 2, Coercer.

This is my current game and my main in it. Some would argue that it isn't really a pet class due to it being labeled a Enchanter and not a Summoner, but if you aren't using one then you are doing it wrong. Basically though this class has everything for me. Amazing group support spells, mez/stuns, and the ability to make a permanent pet or better yet to charm one of the mobs you are fighting to fight for you.

My runner ups for me would be the World of Warcraft Warlock and the Everquest Magician.

WoW's Hunter was my favourite, too. All the fun ways to bounce aggro between yourself and your pet, its ironic that "Huntards" had such a bad reputation because imho it was perhaps the class with the greatest opportunity for a skilled player to excel.

Worst pet class, WAR's White Lions at release time, pathing was so hilariously broken that it was a lucky day indeed if your pet ever managed to get to an enemy and land a hit before you killed it yourself.

EQ1 Necromancer. My first experience with a pet class... as well as a caster class character. And I fell in love with her. Still miss her, and it's been a decade since I've played.

CoV Mastermind. Especially the Thugs! I have one of just about every kind, though.

SWG Pre-NGE Creature Handler... once NGE hit, I never logged her back in, because I refused to change her class. She died a Creature Handler.

Star Trek Online's Captain! Not an obvious choice, but every player gets to have a full party of crew members and you get to manage them like pets all the time. If you think of them as "pets", it's probably one of the deepest systems out there. All the pets are really fleshed out characters, with their own gear and stats and levels and abilities that you customize as you go. Totally customizable appearances, too.

Nothing more flexible than that.

EQ1 Shammy was my favorite. Not a pure pet class, but super fun. Buff the hell out of DogDog, Haste him, and give him 2 fine steel daggers, and let him off his leash...OMG! Plus, I loved hearing his howl.

I have to say that WoW hunters are my favorite mmo class not for the fighting mechanics tho the recent ones are nice, but for the taming. This said i will be happily enjoying my Ranger class in GW2 when it launches.
