With little fanfare, Trion Worlds has released an iPhone mobile app this past weekend for RIFT that should make staying in touch with guildies and in-game events far easier for the on-the-go set.
The app is called RIFT Mobile and is currently available for the low, low price of "free." The app allows RIFT players to talk to friends and guildies whether they're in-game or also using the app -- and yes, there are push notifications if you so desire. The app also supports guild and officer chat, guild messages of the day, zone event notifications, and the guild wall.
Probably the most intriguing feature of the RIFT Mobile app is something called "Lootables" -- ways to earn actual in-game loot while using the app. The app is available in English, French and German languages and can be used only by current players of the game. A community rep on the official forums has confirmed that it's "an early release/beta" and that more official info is on the way.
[Thanks to Valotith for the tip!]

If devs do mobile tie-ins, it needs to be for Android too.

@Tizmah At about 5% market share for Microsoft phones -- probably not.

@Joaquin Crowe : indeed, you can't expect minor-league developers to support every platform, only major players like Blizzard. And even they only have a mobile authenticator for Windows Phone, not the full mobile armory.

@Joaquin Crowe They're working on it, though I admit, considering there are in-game advantages to be had from installing and using this app, they really should have waited till at least the Android version was ready for beta. I'm sure they were just itching to give it a try though and see whether it took off or not.
Hell of a marketing idea!

Omg, I wish they released this earlier before my guild died and I left. This would've been awesome and definitely would've kept my subscription just so I could talk to my guildmates out of game.

That's kind of awesome. Good going, Trion.

RIFT may not have been my personal cup of tea, but Trion is pretty much my favorite MMO developer. These kinds of things are one of the major reasons why.

@Ghostspeaker I actually went back to try RIFT again after the letdown of SWTOR - simply because of how committed the devs are. It's definitely a rather generic theme park - but the attention to detail in everything is very refreshing.

The whole smart phone thing passed me by and I have no desire to get acquainted with it either.
Having said that its good the Trion are continuing to push things like this out into the market place for those that will find it of use. The mmo market is extremely crowded and continual innovations, especially ones that are free to the end users, are needed to stand out from the crowd.
So good stuff, now how do I get this to work with my rotary dial telephone ;p

@Balraw The good thing here is that it isn't tied to smartphones per se, since the two mobile OS versions announced (initially anyhow) are IOS and Android. This means that if you ever are stricken with the desire to get a tablet, as long as it runs either IOS or some current dessert flavor of Android you'll be fine!

The only thing that I want more than this app for Android, is an OS X-native version of RIFT (since my laptop's a Macbook).
I bet I will *always* be in GC when idling in Starbucks once it comes out for my phone, especially since they just made me an officer :)

Trion: hardest working team in the mmorpg space. This is how you justify a monthly subscription, by adding real value.

Never played Rift, so no use for this, wishing Blizzard would take a leaf of of Trion's book and make the Guidchat mobile/Character transfers free of charge.
Well done Trion.

Hope they keep pushing content out to the game. Wanted to resub during Christmas but unfortunately my computer had a bunch of problems.

Thinking about re-subbing to RIFT once I finish up LOTR: War in the North and Trine 2. It appears they've added some more small-group / solo friendly content.
While I am of mixed feeling when it comes to giving players with smartphones advantages, at least they aren't charging extra for it like Blizzard.

Very cool app. It would be nice if this becomes more widespread with MMOs.
