I probably would have stayed subbed to eve if they had planned to release it for PC as well.

With the monocle and internal debacle, having to buy a PS3 to play the planet expansion of Eve was too much of a slap in the face.

As it is, im unsubbed since september 2011.

Waiting for masquerade news, but not holding my breath, ball is in their court.

"The fact that mouse and keyboard controls would give PC players a massive advantage over console gamers is usually cited as the reason the game can't come to the PC too, but I don't buy that; several PS3 games already have USB mouse and keyboard support."

Brendan, I think that a PS3-only launch is a positive thing - especially given CCP's problems this year with spreading themselves too thin. Instead of trying to support console and PC development simultaneously at such an early stage in DUST 514's life, I think it's a sound decision to invest in making one version rock-solid. It's less likely to result in a damaging failure.

But it would be much more cost effective to work with a system they're already familiar with, inother words, the PC.

So far I have yet to see as successful MMO launch on the PS3 when it was supposed to.

Freerealms ended up taking a year and the Agency ended up getting canceled.

Get your core playerbase happy before you work on the niche market.

@(Unverified) Agreed, it absolutely makes financial sense as developing for multiple platforms at the same time is expensive. But I think people saying there can never be a PC release because of the mouse and keyboard factor are being shortsighted, and we should eventually get a PC release.

"On the console side of things, releasing on multiple consoles was never an option as none of the big players in the console war would allow users to fraternise with the enemy. Brand loyalty is the battlefield of today's console market, and it seems Microsoft and Sony aren't quite ready to lay down arms."

This isn't what CCP said though: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-09-will-ps3-exclusive-dust-514-head-to-xbox

@Braiks This is pretty much exactly what I wrote in the article.

Microsoft's demand for a closed Live network means the game server would have to be within Live's network, and that excludes PS3 users from ever being able playing on the same servers as XBox. There are several games out there with cross-platform play on Xbox live, but they were released before Microsoft's push for a closed Live network. For a game whose main feature is a single, shardless universe, you absolutely can't segregate players in any way so that's not acceptable.

This game will crash and burn and more than likely take EvE down with it....it's amazing it's like Hilmar has been possessed by some dude who want's to burn his company to the ground.

I fully expect to see EVE mostly played on emu servers like SWG or E&B in the next three years.

@Dunraven

Doomsayers never miss an opportunity for trolling and merriment. How many times have they said Eve was dying, yet they continue to climb and have more than 360,000 subscribers.

But don't let facts get in your clear expertise in predicting the future.

@Omali You have to admit it is idiotic how they are handling DUST and at best it will be a FPS that very few PS3 fans will bother with...and I don't see many EvE fans buying a PS3 just to play it.

Call me a doomsayer but it has fail written all over it, and when it fails it will piss off CCP venture capitalist. Now ask yourself again...just how devastating could this hair-brianed project be?

@Dunraven

This game is already, and will continue, to hit it big with the hardcore/competitive gaming community on PS3.

We have had fail devs this entire year, we continue to get shit games that dont have proper party systems or dont support clan v clan warfare, and CCP has basically said to a bunch of starving gamers "Here is everything you can dream of in a competitive game, go at it"...

I dont know how detached the eve community is, but there are already console alliances built, spy networks being formed... its comparatively small to BF and CoD, sure, but when it releases expect a lot of serious clans crossing over since the others have still failed.

It will never compete with thier numbers, since casuals = money in consoles, but it will get tons of respect and a good cashflow, plus a dedicated group of players. EVERYONE ive talked to on console will see CCP as gods if they can just make good with bringing the serious, competitive and in depth nature of Eve into an FPS on PS3. We've had it so bad that a lot of the Eve playerbase complaints come of diva-ish.

Trust me, when this game releases it will build a huge reputation, until then there are a lot of grassroots movements in the PS3 community, including Dust alliances trying to recruit skilled clans who had never even heard of the game, and thats one way its being spread.

I've seen similar discussions from PS3 related forums, I find it quite heartening.
Looking forward to dropping "fire Missions" on you and yours this summer, see you then!

CCP has already announced that mouse and keyboard will be supported on the PS3, negating that argument completely.

@(Unverified) If that's true, it makes the chances of a PC release a year or two after the PS3 launch a lot better. But as far as I'm aware, all we know so far is that the engine (Unreal Engine 3) can support mouse and keyboard so developers can add it if they want to.

We also have a recent fan interview that suggests there will be mouse and keyboard support ( http://dust514.org/home/item/everything-we-wanted-to-know-about-dust-514-and-weren-t-afraid-to-ask?category_id=1 ), but it's with the new community manager and we're still waiting on details of exactly how it will work and how CCP intends to level the playing field between controller users and mouse users.

@Brendan Drain that's actually the reference I was using. :p Why would he mention a peripheral only one to two games on the PS3 support if they don't intend to accommodate it?

Should have gone straight to PC. None of the server issues sited in the article would have been an issue. And the player base would have been potentially larger.

I don't think the fact it's a console exclusive a real problem here. At all. People are forgetting it's a downloadable title and on consoles, PS3 AND 360, downloadable shooters such as this have yet to 'make it big' per se.

People buy them. People play them. It's just not a lot of people when compared to the amount who play boxed shooters. The communities just don't seem to stick around for the long run. That's just how it is.

That said, there hasn't really been that many attempts and the best one out the bunch is BF1943 which I think is average at best. So, for all we know, DUST might be the first one to make a serious splash.

I just hope they market it right and it actually comes out in the summer. The summer is a notorious dry period for games and if they play their cards right, DUST can practically have a month all to itself assuming history stays relatively the same as before.

In any case, I'll be picking this up Day 1. Hell, I'd preorder the darn thing if I could lol. This is easily one of my top picks for games I'm most looking forward to this year.

Alright, I have a serious question that after reading through all of this and many other posts about the game I have been unable to answer.

What is Dust 514

Is it an rpg
Is it an fps
Obviously it's multiplayer but to what extent, subscription or otherwise. Literally all I've read about regarding this game is that it's involved with EVE and that it's a PS3 exclusive. WHY is it that a mouse and keyboard would be an advantage, is it because it involves FPS elements, or RTS?

Seriously, can we get some basic information about the actual game. I'm sure there are a lot of people who care immensely about how the game relates to EVE and what it will be available on, but if you're going to try and sell a game based on hype and reputation alone, it really wont get you that far.
