@(Unverified) I played beta and launches of both games and I personally found this category an easy victory for RIFT - and I don't care much for either game now so I have no bias towards RIFT to win.

The only one I don't agree with is "Best Bang for Buck" as on the F2P server EQII is far from Feature-full. You have to pay £8 just to unlock 3 races. Pay for expansions, pay for housing, you know, all that stuff you could get for cheaper on the full server with a £5 copy of the game with all expansions.

I actually Rate EQII F2P as biggest rip-off of the year. With EVE Online not too far behind.

@Pyrii - massive misstatements there.

"You have to pay £8 just to unlock 3 races."

It's actually £6 (750 SC), but races are effectively cosmetic in EQ2, and charging money for cosmetic options is exactly the sort of thing that makes a game good bang for the buck.

"Pay for expansions"

Six of the eight expansions from EQ2's seven year history are 100% free. Of the remaining two, one is only relevant for level 80+ characters, and the other is brand new and can reasonably be expected to cost money.

"pay for housing"

This is a lie, you do not have to pay for housing.

"you know, all that stuff you could get for cheaper on the full server with a £5 copy of the game with all expansions."

£5 copy of the game PLUS a $15/month subscription, you mean?

"It's both the freshness of SWTOR's launch and the fact that MMO fans have been going nuts over this game for years that combine to make this our Game of the Year."

I'm all for awarding worthy games, but to equate hype with worthiness is missing the point a bit.

TOR's hype train is rivaled probably only by the hype train for Guild Wars 2 at this point. TOR's had amazing initial success (moreso than RIFT's initial launch month) apparently. And Massively has also probably had people in the betas and such for the past few months. And it's very safe to assume that EA/Bioware will work hard to keep this game strong and alive to where it'll probably become the Sci-Fi equivalent to WoW (like I've already been hearing).

Tbh I'd say RIFT is the best newcomer to the MMO world since it's been going ridiculously strong for the past (close to) 10 months since launching. At least in terms of content and such. Players-wise, it dropped quite a bit since launch, but if this first year is any indication, I'm sure RIFT will grow much stronger over this coming year, even when it's going to be competing for players alongside WoW/TOR and (probably soon to be) GW2.

I would have switched ToR and Rift. TOR's launch was incredibly smooth for how huge it was and how many people were trying to play it. The snags it did have was dealt it and the Q's were very well managed compared to RIFT.

And RIFT has been a year long favorite, I clearly see it as game of the year. Other then that, some nice winners, especially Eq2 it deserves it they turned their F2P model right around.

I dissagree with game of the year it is wayyy to new. It hasn't even been out a month. From what I have heard ( and maybe I'm just misinformed) there isn't much in the way of endgame content.

Star Wars Galaxies' closure was a huge surprise to me...I thought that it had closed down years earlier. As for Wildstar, it reminds me a lot more of the anime Outlaw Star than Firefly.

@Spacegrass Wildstar looks promising, but I'd love to see SoE roll their Galaxies engine and lessons into a Firefly MMO.

@Borick

SOE learned its lesson with LucasArts and has said it will stick to its own IP for any future games.

I agree with Rifts launch winning, even though I did not play it because I think SWTOR's launch was pretty impressive, but I do think they might have borrowed some from things learned and observed from Rift so that I agree with.

As for RoI being best expansion, I do NOT think it deserves any awards except maybe how to finally run off more players than any of their prior mistakes.

Now I would definitely give Turbine the 2011 Award for Corporate Stooge who allowed a BIG company to come in and ruin your game, but thats just me.

@SwarlesBarkley

If the credit for the corporate stooge award goes from the time F2P goes live, then I guess Lotro wins 2011, but Cryptic (with STO) is totally taking that award in 2012.

The explanation for SWTOR game of the year from Massively - "but it's both the freshness of SWTOR's launch and the fact that MMO fans have been going nuts over this game for years that combine to make this our Game of the Year."

So it has nothing to do with the quality of the game, but it's those random 2 bullshit factors that made you choose it for game of the year??? Nice going Massively.

I think both of those mmo's are theme park cookie cutters with their own gimmick each - RIFT having rifts and SWTOR with it's voice acting / story. But to see SWTOR picked off of those reasons is just pathetic.
