Quick, what's the most you've ever paid for an MMO microtransaction? If you said $16,000, you might be the guy in the photo above. The Escapist reports that this unnamed gamer dropped a huge chunk of change for a virtual sword exclusive to Age of Wulin, an upcoming free-to-play sandpark MMO from Snail Games.
He wasn't alone in throwing large sums of money at an unreleased game, as the devs also auctioned off a spear sheath for $2,500 and something called a Hook of Departure for $1,600.
Age of Wulin is currently undergoing a Chinese beta test, and gPotato has plans to bring the game to European audiences sometime in the future.

Did anyone check to see if this auction was for a charity?

Yeah, this is kinda crazy, but I can see it if people had "money to burn".
But we are not talking about paying to have about 30-60 minutes of playtime under a very large set of monitors in the roof of a mall or some mount in WoW that is ultra-rare. This is an unreleased game.
Granted, it was an auction and probably a way to drum up funds for developing the game (and it's quite possible some corporate folks asked rich people they know so this may've more been akin to "charity" for the company than anything).
I do remember Age of Wulin was one of the more interesting games coming out (with the craziest mounts I've seen in any online game) but PvP and still-to-be-tinkered action-based combat.

This reminds me of a player who paid $69,000 for a Virtual Egg.

You know and I hate to say this...but in a subscription model, this would never be an issue (presuming it's not sub + MT's that is).

What subscription based game doesn't have micro-transactions these days?

I think RIFT, SWTOR and Darkfall doesn't....but I could be wrong.
And that depends on what you include to define as MT's. The standard server tranfers or cash shops? The former existed before MT's became a industry catch phrase. But I am purely speaking from a MT free position. Since in my view subs with MT's are in many ways worse than poorly thought out F2P's.

BRB, making a F2P MMO and then auctioning off one of a kind, powerful items to the highest bidder. Then stopping development on it and swimming in my piles of money. Then repeating the process all over again.

I have a feeling that this is a staged publicity stunt. No one drops $16K on a virtual item for a game that is still in beta.

I guess they already have their own Sword of a Thousand Truths.
Is this really a PvP game? I wonder if that was PvP item. Talk about pay to win.
