Sadly the iOS sandbox MMO Outer Empires died in 2011, I know Beau played it, it will be sadly missed by me and others. A deep game in your pocket.

I don't play much mmos because of my current lack of time... but I always try to test the games you describe here by myself. I fully agree with your choices :-)

When is massively going to get a clue, browser based games written in java/javascript are complete garbage for people looking for something to play outside facebook.

Stop promoting games that a desktop could play better 15 years ago.

@sandals

Your lack of reason amuses me.

@EventVox

Runescape is arguably the best java based game so far created, are you going to say it an incredible game in terms of graphics and features LOL.

The truth is java is utter garbage for cpu / memory / display / and communication programming, in essence maximizing the cpu/gpu of your system.

That is why no real game companies use it, or ever will, massively needs to get a clue.

But feel free to extol the virtues of java and maybe add in another example if you can actually find one outside farmville.

@sandals Features, yes. I would say RuneScape is far up there with WoW and the EQ's as far as content goes. Thought Java isn't the best platform, Unity is quickly growing which lets dev's make some interesting games in browsers. Saying it will never hold a real MMO when RS is as real MMO as you can get isn't doing your argument any favors.

Eden Eternal is a fine-looking game, but better graphics than Age of Conan or Champions??

I'd also like to know your definition of "game." From what I've experienced of Glitch, I can't call it a game, but a toy.

2011 was my first foray in F2P MMORPGs, and I have you to thank for that, Beau. The innovation that many of them have brought to the genre is very refreshing.

Eden Eternal and Runescape are great choices. Playing and enjoying both of those. I played Glitch but didn't like it at all. Pocket Legends I played once but it's quite hard work on an iPod touch and I haven't tried it again. The others I haven't played.

I might have asked this before, but have you taken a look at Aerrevan yet, Beau? I finally managed to get it running again (had to reinstall the whole thing) and I hope to give it a run over the weekend. Looks pretty good so far.

@Bhagpuss Yeah I gave it a try (and tried to stream it) about 3 times. It literally bugged out on me so bad I couldn't play it. It's VERY indie! lol

I wish I had never sold my Runescape account. I'd gladly play that over the shit WoW has become any day.

as he said in the article, this is all opinion so don't take these choices too seriously. we can agree that we disagree with some of his picks (or all of them). :)

I have to say I disagree with game of the year. First off it seems cheap to give game of the year to a game that has been out for litearly years. I have never been a big fan of runescape but I am willing to admit what it has done for browser mmorpgs. So don't bash it folks (I bet half the bashers have nerver played it).

Beau, if you aren't going to use a non-netbook comp to MMO game on, please do not do awards. I honestly doubt that eden eternal or spiral knights beat out the many decent F2P games and conversions in terms of graphics, sound, etc as opposed to having the best that run on an atom processor with 2 gig of ram and a 10 inch screen. I REALLY doubt glitch is as good as you think it is compared even to other F2P games like, oh, Free Realms?

The idea in general is good-F2P games need a best of award series, and they need REAL evaluation, but you are limiting yourself too much to take this seriously.

@Dblade I use a quad core gaming desktop, a mid range laptop with 8 gigs of ram and a standard graphics chip, an iPad, an Android phone and the netbook you mentioned. I've also played pretty much any title you can name.

I have done my homework, and this is what I came up with. You don't have to agree with my opinion, but understand that I actually do play more games than I had the room to write about.

The only thing I disagree with here is Glitch. I am not sure what to call it a game it is most certenly not. Yes I tried it, I wish I could get my few hours of time back.

I thought glitch was more creepy than charming. It was like someone decided to turn their LSD trip in to a game - a bad LSD trip.

It pains me that you almost nominated Glitch as Game of the Year.

While I'll admit that our tastes in games are different, I absolutely fail to see where Glitch becomes more than a graphical version of some Facebook-styled grinding game, where the "gameplay" revolves entirely around repeating tasks to gain currency that allows you to repeat the same tasks more.

Eden Eternal and Spiral Knights were pretty cool, though.

Runescape is a good game but they have not followed through with several issues. First off they are failing again on the bot issues. Yes they did what they called the bot nuke but have failed on keeping bots off the game. Again several areas of the game are unplayable due to the bots. Several people have asked Jagex when a fix would happen but yet they refuse to admit that they have a issue. I wish people would look more into these games before giving them raving reviews like this one. I would not subscribe to any jagex product due to lack of support and lack of communication on their product.
