As the free-to-play conversion for Star Trek Online continues to approach, the game's development team continues to make more last-minute polishes. As outlined in the most recent entry in the Path to F2P blog series, one improvement directly pertains to the game's graphics, putting in DirectX 11 support for players whose cards can support the display mode. While it won't offer a performance increase for every player, there are players who have reported big jumps in FPS with DirectX 11 on while testing on the Tribble server.
The other major improvement deployed to the test server is a change to the game's rank display. Previously, the game displayed levels by rank and grade -- a player would move from Commander 10 (level 29) to Captain 1 (level 30), which was evocative of the setting but a bit hard to process at a glance. So the display has been trimmed up and improved, with player level displaying as a rank followed by the level (the previous example would now display as Commander 29, then Captain 30). No actual levels have been lost -- it's just a change to ensure that new players have an easier time understanding the level differences.

As I've got a decent, but not smoking hot DX11 card (Radeon 5750), this is great news for me. Granted, my video card works fine as is, and pretty, but my laptop with its AMD A4 CPU and a DX11 integrated video? Oh, yeah, just what the doctor ordered ^_^

Does this mean that a large space map is on the way?

@Lateris
There was a comment in the forums by the debs that they eventually want to move to a unified space map, instead of warping to each sector.

I don't get why they couldn't make all these changes before free 2 play?

@Yellowdancer if they had, somebody else would be saying "I don't get why they couldn't make it free 2 play before these changes?"
Things get scheduled by management based on any number of factors. These got placed on the schedule after F2P.

And what I said was confusing. I meant why couldn't they have made these improvements while still with Atari and were sub only. But I guess they did rush development soo....whatever.

From what I heard, Atari wasn't generous with pumping development dollars into STO, and PWE is much more so.

Seriously, were there players actually thinking that moving from Commander 10 to Captain 1 was a LOSS in level? /facepalm

@(Unverified) This was my reaction exactly. Or that the heirarchy of the ranks was too difficult to remember. Good lord. Don't hate the change, doesn't really matter to me... but the fact that it was apparently necessary is very depressing. :/

The issue is more things like not being able to participate in Q's Winter Wonderland until level 25. You have to do the mental math to remember if that's Lt. Commander 5, Commander 5, or Captain 5.

Unf, yes! I have always adored the graphics of STO and look forward to dialing it up to 11.

Cool a soon to be f2p game gets dx11 calls before ToR does.

Had a quick go last night. The DX11 option certainly improves the framerate for me, so that's great! The new Skills UI is great too! Though I'm not sure about the new skills yet...
