If it's true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the devs behind Champions Online can safely be called Star Wars fans. Whether they're Star Wars: The Old Republic fans is another matter, but chances are good seeing as how the game's newest archetype would feel right at home in a galaxy far, far away.
The Unleashed is a new brawler role that looks quite a bit like your average Sith lord, right down to the dual red blades and sinister black robes. Cryptic's archetype description features phrases like cosmic knight, dark inquisitor, and militant monk, and the release blurb says that the Unleashed is coming to Champions today, December 19th.
Is it a tongue-in-cheek homage or a shameless attempt to capitalize on the biggest hype-train the MMO space has ever seen? You decide, and be sure to head to the Champions website to learn more.

This is a dual blader with force powers. While there is many themes(magic eastern warrior, esp warrior, etc) that its powers could fit, by the picture is kind of compelling the homage attempt.
Unleashed is the first free Archetype since f2p was released, so I would say it is more like free player attractor than immediate money maker technique. This week it is expected 2 new power frameworks wind and earth with its corresponding ATs the Squall and the Mountain, which I guess are not free ATs.
For subscribers, it is pretty much meaningless since there is no real new powers in the AT. I'm looking forward wind and earth powers more.

I thought this was hilarious when I saw it. It's a little pathetic I guess, but in a cute way.

@Ehra
It's kind of sad to do it THIS early during the SWTOR release and maybe a bit desperate, but having another type of player for their base isn't too bad I guess.
But the market here is now more crowded than any other time so you gotta copy the popular thing to survive, or that's Perfect World's thinking.

When Champions went live the 2nd toon I made was an all black wearing, lightning based, evil looking bleach white skinned chick. Acouple abilities from the "Force" powerset. "Choke" from the Psi abilities set, and the melee attack from the Power Armor set (which could have it's color changed to anything) set to red for a makeshift lightsaber.
Champions had potential but I haven't played in over a year. I tried to go back but many problems still existed, though I miss Darth Lucious :(

Between this, and that "alternate dimension where heroes are evil tyrants and there's an underground resistance movement" expansion pack that they just *happened* to release at the same time as CoH:Going Rogue... yeah, I'm starting to have some suspicions.

@gandales WHat? Have you played the game?If you took out all the rip-off there'd be next to nmo content. Whiteout rips off The Thing, Chinatown missions and contacts rip off Big Trouble In Little China!

While the clothing reminds me of Star Wars, the actual blades remind me of No more Heroes.

I know Star Wars doesn't have a patent on general words...
...but "Unleashed"? Come on. Why didn't they just call these guys "Starkillers"?
