Apparently some counter system was added to FFXIV and people are reporting anywhere between 150-400 on a server. That's this weekend after a (supposedly) major patch. This MMO is officially on life support.

And in less than three weeks they start charging. Not a smart move for an MMO on life support to begin with.

@HokieKC
Servers seems to be varying wildly. Less popular servers like Karnak or Fabul are showing those numbers, but the more populated one like Lindblum, Besaid, Rabanastre seem to be at 700+ constantly. JP heavy servers Gysahl and Mysidia topping 1500+.

Small drop in population since they disabled the old search mecahnic, but not as much as i would have figured.

@Syesta - I read that at noon today Japan time (12/17) the Mysdia server only had 676 people. And like you said that's a JP heavy server. Western servers are way lighter than that.

Now the waiting for 1.21 begins.
These past few patches have been light on content and heavy on back-end system changes.
1.21 is a huge content dump, including jobs.
The lack of a population bump from 1.20 may be from just that. 1.21 is a bunch of food, while 1.18-1.20 have been replacing the plates and glasses.

@Syesta Speaking of food, any word on when the food system is getting a use?

Server population will not recover until ver 2.0 is closer to launch so those launch players can power through the "unique" pre ver 2.0 content and obtain the mysterious "special item" granted to pre 2.0 players.

Once the Ps3 goes live I expect populations to rise, and old/new PC players to try or come back.

Now about 1.20:

It's content lite. But the revision of battle skills i think needs to be reworked, or systems from 1.19 to be updated (linking).
Right now mobs that link overpower groups below lv 40, for merely the lack of AOE crowd control. Be it AOE hate management or sleep/bind type enfeebles they don't exist pre lv 40.

The lack of AOE sustainable damage from Melee classes slows the EXP rate down, which honestly was needed, but your party is just a link away from wipe, from multi-linked mobs or add from the rapid rate of mob respawn.

A few more adjustments need to be made to balance the gameplay. But FFXIV is headed in a good direction. I'm looking forward to 1.21

The bit about the dye corrections in FF14 really struck me because I had recently read the GW2 article on dyes. It was like night and day. It showed me that the underlying dye mechanics in FF14 were utterly broken - dyed items WERE A DIFFERENT DATABASE ITEM, ARE YOU FOR REAL?!
