@Oranuro First off, SOE's deal ended. Neither EA nor LucasArts ended SWG. If you read Massively's fine interview:

Then you'll see the contract ran out in 2012 anyway, and that SOE and LucasArts both thought it was a good time to end it.


Second off, the Clone Wars Adventures MMO means that the number is dropping from 3 to 2.

I don't believe everything I read. Soe is a graveyard for MMOs and SWG being one it's more profitable titles lead me to believe they were not to continue the license because the powers that be didn't present them with the option.

@Oranuro I won't dispute that you can't believe everything you read, but the track-record for dishonesty lies with Smedley and SOE, not LucasArts. Whenever LucasArts forces itself down a company's throat they're usually pretty "Yeah, so what?" about it. The words out of Smedley's mouth are only good until he's done talking.

I rarely agree with Miffy, but I do today. SWG died when NGE hit overnight with no warning.

Really, how many posts do you have to make in a thread for SWG players who are mourning its demise? You hated it. We get it. Why do you need to be such an ass about it?

For all your proclamations, here are a few facts. LucasArts had originally announced it would renew the license. SOE continued to develop the game, adding things like atmospheric flight even after announcing its cancellation. Following a personnel change at LucasArts, suddenly the license is NOT extended - and SWG is slated to end the same week that TOR launches. SOE is circumspect, but does say it has "learned its lesson" and will rely on its own IP from now on.

So, TOR had nothing to do with the death of SWG? Sure, and I have a city on Corellia to sell you.

More to the point, though, why do you feel the need to come here and repeatedly pour salt into the wounds of we grieving SWG players? If you represent the type of player who will be playing TOR, I am glad I will never be a part of that community.

First off, I feelya on the post thing. I don't know if it's my browser clipping or what but I've replied to the wrong person so many times after I haven't meant to... dunno, getting senile maybe... >.<

Second off, if we're gonna stick to facts these aren't "my" proclamations, they're SOE's and LA's. As far as Smedley and gang's veracity for truth-telling, that's a matter of public record.

Granted, the fact is we don't know what went down given that it was behind closed doors. And while LucasArts doesn't generally care what people think, it is possible that with CWA that LA wanted to keep outward appearances after it pulled out the rug after the personnel change. It's also possible, however, given the facts you cite, that while LA didn't mind renewing the license SOE saw an albatross and decided to get out while the contract expiration was good in time for its customers to jump to another SOE title in time for Holiday sales.

Again, we just don't know. But if I have to choose which is the likelier scenario:

A) LA deciding it wanted less money and arbitrarily closed down a game vastly different from TOR while keeping CWA alive, because: "Screw money--that's why!"

vs.

B) SOE wanted to get out from under royalty payments (which were set with expectations of 200K or more subscriptions) for an aging game with a shrinking player-base...

and I know how I'd bet.


Lastly, I am happy about the end of an error, not about players losing their game... no matter who those players are.

Having said that, I remember very well how the SOE-fanbois who stayed with SWG turned on their fellow players who SOE wronged. VERY. WELL. I am also very well aware of how the SOE-fanbois have treated us on forums outside of SWG--even here on Massively--in the subsequent years.

I don't want to rehash any of that nastiness here, salt in the wounds and all, and I won't. I will say that any and all SOE-fanbois have my blessing and encouragement to avoid SWTOR and any future STAR WARS related MMOs.
