Just in case you haven't gone into full-on meltdown from Guild Wars 2 news overload, ArenaNet has tossed out one more announcement for you via today's Reddit Ask Me Anything session: "We will officially enter Closed Beta Testing this Friday. It will be marked with an increase in our pool of testers. To clarify, this phase of testing is still under NDA and is not open to the public."
While it's something -- and definitely more than anything we've seen so far -- the population at large shouldn't expect to see closed beta key applications and giveaways popping up all over the place. NCsoft seems to be continuing its pattern of very limited testing for GW2. Still, it's a step in the right direction for eager fans.
[UPDATE: ArenaNet elaborated on the beta information by explaining "We have a studio internal selection process for our Closed Beta that starts on Friday. There will be no public application form."]

"studio internal selection process" does not necessarily mean "friends and family". My understanding was that they already have had "friends and family" going for some time, so that would make what you're thinking redundant.
What it more likely means is that they have a system in place that does not require applications. Instead, it evaluates players of GW1 and probably other factors such as forum participation.

"Its invite only. That doesn't necessarily mean f&f only. :)"

It looks like we finally have a bit of news that can compete with the Death Star that is TOR.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! All I want for Christmas is a Guild Wars 2 closed beta key!

Well, I suppose that`s something? It doesn't really change much for us, or mean the game is closer to release or anything.
Just have to be patient. Breathe. Hopefully TOR can keep me occupied for the next 10 months or so, which is when I suspect GW2 will launch.

"It doesn't really change much for us, or mean the game is closer to release or anything."
The results and feedback from CBT will directly impact the time it takes for the game to go into OBT, which in turn will influence the release date, so yes, actually, it does.

This is like saying it's Christmas in Ireland, and it's the greatest christmas possible, but we can't go..... soooo.....
I'm not sure how we can get geeked for a closed beta, tech they been doing Alpha testing for a while, there not much difference.
