Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, it's considered a "failure" in the West. If you log in any time at this point, 97% of the "players" are just afk jumping around in the capitals for whatever time based event is going on at the time. The other 3% (the average across the servers who are max level, btw) actually play, but only for abyss events and log off to do something else. On top of that, early levels have their gear literally handed to them as they level up, so they don't have to work for anything or chase that gear carrot.

The game is good, don't get me wrong. It's just not favorable to the "WoW crowd".

If this game wasn't heavy grindy and had a huge bot clean up, I may consider coming back when they change the payment model for NA. I gave AION 4 months of my time and it was really burnt out, with SWTOR already in motion and GW2 coming out hopefully before Spring time, I think AION's time may have just passed me by, but I may return to it in a few years, who knows.

@stamps79

They've actually cleaned out most of the grind (though I will note 51-55 can still be pretty grindy) and the game has hardly any bots anymore, just FYI.

WOW these guys are DUMBBBBBBBB. All they had to do to get a TON of new players is have a REAL FREE TRIAL! LOL. A 5hr/5day trial is NOTHING and is the #1 reason why there isnt as many players as there should be.

Lets hope the NA servers go f2p, because a ton of people are waiting to play.

If anyone knows how someone from NA can play on an EU server, let us know S!

I love how this guy posts the same response every single time no matter how many people point out that the game has an actual trial and has had one for quite some time.

Talk about having one's head in the sand...

not suprised. played this game at launch. so shit. so much so, that despite the hype, im going to pass on blade and soul and every other ncsoft game in the future. here's to hoping bluehole/ eme and tera dont go down the same road to fail.

@Supfresh

That... makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The quality of Aion has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of Blade & Soul. ESPECIALLY when considering they're being developed by two completely different teams...

@Zyrusticae

sure it does.the game was too korean. they said they were going to "westernize" it. All they did was translate the text. The game sucks same as most korean mmos do. they favour and therefore put developmental emphasis on the superficial shit more than actual gameplay. Stuff like artistic style and combat animations etc. Balde and soul will follow the same development path, you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

The gameplay was a money grind. Currency should be a secondary part of the game, not the entire objective. This, again is very common in nscoft games.

NCsoft is a korean company making games for their largest market share -> asia. boring, highly repetitive games. Blade and soul will be the same. an asian mmo with translated text.

Gameplay aside, the game controls in aion were incredibly clunky and unpolished compared to other, similar games, the ui was shit and the lack of superficial addon support was another negative. If you arent going to take the time to design a nice ui with customization options at least open up support for 3rd party developers. These things are, also, unlikely to change with new games.

and finally they didnt give a shit about botting/ farming in the game. Maybe they have enough people to combat it, maybe their software isnt good enough or maybe it's something else entirely. but it doesnt matter what the reason was, the fact is this was a problem that also is company related and not game specific.

The only plus it will have on aion is the lack of flying. The flying mechanic (and movement mechanics in general) in aion were so horribly clunky and poorly designed.

@Zyrusticae

i guess saying i wont try it, is a little inaccurate. If the game comes out and a few months after launch it has great reviews and everyone loves it, i will probably give it a try. But aion was the last time i try an ncsoft game at launch.

Suprised. This was certainly out of any expectations for Aion to go F2P this early instead of in years to come on any objective (financial/population) basis
(aside from emotion driven doom mongering of some hater and trolls who just called out for it even years before launch or ever playing it, solely because the F2P reputation had been negatively tainted due to some horrible and failed Western MMOs going F2P either, at trend L2 broke, no coincidence another NCSoft tittle).

But even 8 year old L2 is launching new servers now after going F2P.
Turns out the profit and rush of new players is so huge for quality games going F2P, they'd even consider the second most popular MMORPG on the western market to go F2P, even when there's zero needs for it at this time (unlike those failures of games like STO, AoC or WAR who where and are desperate to live off from Pay2Win tainted cash shop sales who gave F2P such a bad reputation)
