A long time ago, in a game industry far, far away, there was an MMORPG called Star Wars Galaxies. It made a lot of people happy (and sad), hung around for eight plus years, and is now being forced into an early retirement by the next big thing.
Before it rides off into the twin sunset, SWG is holding a series of farewell events. According to the patch notes for today's update, the Galactic Civil War score will be frozen on Wednesday, December 14th at midnight EST, at which time Jabba's event kicks off near the Sarlacc Pit in the deeps of the Tatooine desert
Three more events will begin at server restart on Thursday, December 15th, sometime around 7:00 a.m. EST: one near the Research Outpost on Endor, one in the Nub Shanda zone of Coronet, Corellia, and one in the city of Theed on the planet Naboo.
Massively's Karen Bryan and the rest of the SWG-fans among the Massively staff will be livestreaming the final countdown on the Starsider server on Thursday, starting at 11 p.m. EST. Join us as we reminisce about and salute this groundbreaking sandbox.

Sorry, but no thanks. TOR is an entirely different game than SWG, and nothing about it will fill the void left when one of the last great sandbox games is laid to rest.

Goodnight, sweet prince.
I was a big fan for about the first two years of the game, for that was before Combat Update AND New Game Experience ruined everything. While this version of Starwars: Galaxies is not the one I fell in love with, it still holds a place in my heart as it was my first MMO and the MMO that I hold others to in terms of quality. I've played them all and none have come close.
I would also be remiss if I did not mention "SWGemu," which has been running the best version of Starwars: Galaxies for years now, pre-Combat Update or NGE and would recommend it for those who enjoyed SWG. Physical discs required, of course(which is why SOE hasn't shut it down) but you can find those in the bargain bin in many places.

At the end there is a huge Deathstar with the letters SOE on it and it blows up in your face!

When players tire of the themepark that is TOR, you will regret this decision LucasArts.

I hope you're not serious... NGE practically put SWG into themepark territory.

I agree. TOR is fine for players who love their themeparks, but those who wanted to "live" in a Star Wars world, where they could tell their own stories rather than choosing from pre-scripted choices, will miss SWG very much, indeed.

I hope YOU'RE not serious. The NGE added themepark elements, but SWG was so much more than a WoW clone like TOR. Can you build cities in TOR? Engage is space combat? Are there entertainers? Dedicated crafters? Can you place absolutely every in-game object in a house or ship to completely customize it? Is there atmospheric flight - off the rails? Can you explore every square inch of a planet without forced pathing? Is there weather? Can you build a trading empire by searching for rare spawns and collecting the best resources, or is everything you make exactly the same as everything everyone else makes?
Please - TOR may have its virtues, although they are lost to me. But please do not act like SWG was of the same ilk, particularly if you have not played since you rage-quit over the NGE.

Bon Voyage SWG. You had so much potential, yet killed in infancy by Raph Koster. Still, you tried to make right and even had worthy space combat. Sad to see you leave the MMO world.

Yeah =(
One thing I think TOR really dropped the ball with is race selection. It's like they went out of their way to pick the most bland races out there.
Really, they kind of wrote themselves into a corner with it though. Because of how the game works each playable race needs to meet two requirements: 1) speak 'basic' and 2) sex with companions. Wookie love!
The first requirement really puts a sad limit on the race selection...the second, well, I guess that's up for debate.

Must be sad for all the SWG fans out there. I mean, I know that all the MMOs I love playing will be permanently gone someday... but it always seems so far off. I know I would be very sad to get booted off the server, never to login again.
I hope all you fans find another game to be passionate about!
