My guild wars landscape shots still look awesome. The character models.... not as good as I remember them looking when it came out :\

EQ2 looked absolutely horrible to me even when I was playing it myself, tweaked to the best it would give me. Screenshots are just outright awful. Their art director has no aesthetic taste at all that I can see.

WoW almost never looks good in screenshots. Just look at their screenshots of the day page.

None of them.

Sorry, after my recent Skyrim marathons nothing multiplayer is holding up in the graphics department. The first time on top of the Throat of the World and being able to look out to the Sea of Ghosts...

EQ2 - The environments look really sparse and the textures are too bland - not enough small details...I have played it though and it's more fun than it looks.

As has already been mentioned, EQ2 is downright bad graphics wise no matter how you look at it. Even the alternate character models are sad compared to a game like FFXI, released several years prior.

WoW doesn't suit my tastes either, except in rare special effects instances. Even using the settings macros to go above what the interface usually allows, and an unofficial d3d .dll to force HDR, it still doesn't look that great. There's only so much you can do with low-res textures, two-dimensional greenery, and blocky cartoony character models.

Everquest 2. It's a game that looks, and performs, like it was designed by a committee.

I absolutely LOVED the original Everquest, and would gladly go back to EQ over WOW if Everquest:Next can marry an interesting style with their absolutely superior mix of classes.

But EQ2 is probably the worst-looking second-gen MMO to me, and that perception hasn't changed over the last seven years.

End of Nations. There's nothing obviously wrong with it from a technical standpoint, but all the screenshots have a heavy Command and Conquer feel. It's cheesy and ugly.

Most screenshots from any sort of game never look that good.

The only thing I use screenshots to determine is whether the UI is acceptable. If the shot has the UI hidden, I glance over it 90% of the time. I want to see the UI.

EQ2, LOTRO, and GW2. I think all 3 of them look terrible in screenshots.

Eve Online,

Not because the screenshots look dated because they don't. The graphics in that game are simply stunning. Everything from the planets to the ships to the nebula.

What the screenshots show are a very plain fight, or little dots on your screen. It doesn't look appealing because you're not seeing what's going on at all.

I can take a screenshot of a 80vs80 ship battle and most people would simply see little red and purple squares on the screen. But those who play eve know that your heart starts racing and the adrenaline is pumping when you notice those little golden crosshairs start popping up and you start broadcasting for reps.

WoW shots. The game itself is so much more than what's shown on the screenshots. I absolutely hate static shots from the game, but i really like the cartooney graphics of actual in-game animation.

The extreme opposite of that is LoTRO. I really like how the game looks like in the shots, but the in-game graphics bored me to death for some reason.

EQ2's graphics make me want to stab my eyes out. Seriously it's been around for ages and they could have prettied up the game a ton by now and haven't.

@(Unverified) Quit using integrated graphics. There are things like Godrays, shadows, ambient occlusion, etc in the game now.

Honestly? Of the new stuff, I think Star Wars: The Old Republic looks a lot better when you're actually playing in the game-world than it has ever looked in screenshots or preview videos.

As far as older MMORPGs go, someone has already mentioned the hideous default character models in EverQuest II (use the Alternate Appearance option!). And those characters /always/ looked fugly -- it's not just an age thing.

And LotRO is another game which always looks like ass in screenshots and video clips, but it's a beautiful world when you're actually playing in it.

My opinions, anyway.

Guild Wars. I like the game a lot, and when I play the game I think it looks great, but the screenshots just look terrible in comparison. Same thing for WoW, imo. While playing, the style is very flowing and works... but a screenshot makes it look old and blocky.

On the opposite end, theres STO. The game's graphics itself don't flow very well and its a bit stilted. However, the screenshots look amazing. :)
